Is there enough room in the cowling to side mount an OS 46 AX 2 stroke with a Pitts style muffler? Any info on flying characteristics would also be helpful.

Thanks,

Jim

The Ultra Sport is a great plane to build and fly. You can mount your engine sideways with a pitts muffler. It is tight, but it can be done. Good Luck, Dave

I tossed the plastic cowl on mine and made up a balsa cowl similar to that for my old Ultra Sport. Fitted a 46FX with the standard muffler coming out at the bottom (again same as the US40).

I have both the old Ultra Sport and the US+. In my opinion the old version not only builds easier but flys better too (sorry!). I found the US+ build to be more complex than necessary (eg all the interlocking bits in the wing) and somehow it doesn't track as smoothly as the old one.

Not what you wanted to hear I'm sure, but that's my opinion. Unfortunately for me I crashed my old Ultra Sport last weekend flying in a strong wind. Shredded the wing but it will be repaired.

Thanks for the info. I am just in the thinking stages for a winter project and you have helped. You have given me the information I am looking for. I have also been considering an RV 4.

Pitts mufflers can be problematic for engines with really large stock carburetors. Large carbs have poor fuel draw and they depend upon substantial muffler pressure. Many Pitts style mufflers do not produce significant muffler pressure unless an exhaust pipe is restricted, which kills engine performance. The Ultra Sport .40 is best when flown at a good clip (fast). If you don't mind wallowing performance caused by less airspeed, then proceed with the Pitts Style muffler. I assume that you are going for the cleaner appearance of an internal muffler, true?

Jim,

I built mine a few years back. OS .70 4-stroke, Mechanical retracts, Fiberglass cowl. Built pretty much stock except didn't go with the counter weights on the elevator.

It flew very fast. The airplane was also a bit 'twichy'. I had the cg in the recommended area and it flew fine.

Scott.

I have a US+ and I love it, fast and precise at low rates, and WILD at high rates, I still cant perform much 3D with it, but it hovers easy, I've tried to learn water falls, and I'm almost there, anyway if you are not interested in 3D stuff, just keep the plane in low rates and have a ball.
