I want something offroad. I was about to buy an LST2 monster truck but then I re-considered the HPI Baja.

The price of admission is considerably higher, but I figure the 1/8 scale nitros end up costing alot of money pretty quickly anyway. I notice that most of the parts iv looked at are about the same price whether 1/8 or 1/5 scale.

1/5 scale tires look like they will last much longer. It comes standard with beadlock rims I HATE glueing. The engine should last far longer and be more reliable than nitros. Fuel is cheap, runtimes are longer, all parts are bigger and stronger.

So the way I see it a Baja might actually work out cheaper (and less annoying) than a 1/8 scale nitro. Yes ?

Definatly. I look at how much i spent on my truggy and for the money in it i could have a had a MCD rtr easy. These nitros get expensive quick when you want to improve performance or just bash. From my understanding of 1/5ths, they are alot less of a hassel than nitros in many ways:
-Dont need a starterbox/drill
-Fuel is alot less
-Never needs tunning
-Cheaper to go faster
-Engine last longer
-Cheap to rebuild
-Built tougher
-Parts are the same as most 1/8th parts

I dont have a 1/5th yet but like you, i want to get one, i did research on largescales for at least a year now and found out alot about them. The tires on the baja are about the same cost as the 1/8th tires on monster trucks. Id say go for the 1/5th, i definatly will be soon as i make some rc sales.

think of it like this...a nitro has to be tuned every 3 days or so depending on weather and what not...took me less than 3 min to tune my Baja, and starts right up every time, reguardless of the weather..

i've said this alot now, but I will throw it out again...i've been building and racing nitros for 10+ yrs now, and will never go back...and I havent even driven my Baja yet cause of some very minor issues...needed a new steering servo, and the pull starter that was on it was no good...and i got it used...still havent spent $500 total...then again mine isnt an HPI...its a KM clone...but you get the idea

but no the parts for a 1/8 truggy will NOT fit a 5B...major difference in size..and cheaper to go faster...not really...the 5b and clone rtr's come with a 23cc...if you want bigger, atleast $175-$300 for a bigger engine...

but you will get,

Longer engine life
Less maintinance
parts still break, but thats the fun of rc bashing is it not?
you dont have to go to your hobby shop for fuel
and the size of the 5b compared to a 1/8 truggy is unmatched...I can post some pics of my 1/8 truggy next to my Baja tomorrow just to show..

lol, i didnt mean the parts are interchangable from 1/8th to 1/5th, i meant the prices were around the same.

Yes, my one and only last nitro is now officially up for sale. I now have 3 gassers and plans for at least 2 more, one of which may or may not be a boat. I got bored with nitro after many years pissing around with engines and racing. Like many, I can't understand why I didn't make the change sooner.

Sounds good. Im looking foward to stress free running I must say. I live right near a great beach too perfect for the Baja.

Im going to get the SS version.

Let Me add this to the situation too, the price of gas has been going crazy lately, how long do you think it will be before that hits the price of Nitro? My guess is, when it does hit nitro, it will not do it in pennies per gallon either.
You look at top fuel dragsters, even the big teams are crying about the price of nitro increasing expodentially, I believe that you will see this happen all the way down.

Aside from that, I think you will really enjoy the Baja. I sold ALL my nitros after a few days with the Baja. And you live near a beach, this is a no brainer

I have done calculations of price per minute of nitro versus 2-stroke gas mix. Nitros (assuming $25 per gallon for fuel) are about 800% (8 times) more expensive to run than 2-stroke. This was based on gas at $2.50 per gallon. Now with gas around $4.10 per gallon it does bring it down a somewhat (assuming nitro fuel costs have not gone up) but it is still a HUGE difference.

I skipped nitro altogether in the hobby. Went straight from 1:10 scale electric to 1:5 scale gas. I figured I would break even with the up front model cost in less than a year. With nitro fuel cost being so high I didn't want to constantly have to come out of pocket for expensive fuel.

What's happening to the cost of hobby nitro fuel with racing nitro fuel prices going through the roof?

Nitro will be going up dramatically very soon. When current stock is depleted, the price is going to sky rocket. There are rumours everywhere, including as Dave said, from the top fuel guys, that they are about to suffer a shortage. People are already stockpiling it.

No, you read right, i worded it wrong.

I just heard this morning from a friend that nitro around here is going up $10, so the 30% i usually buy will be $40 instead of $30. I hope to never see the day gas per gallon is the same as nitro per gallon, or id have to ride a bike places for sure.

I heard that's the beginning, the 'first' stage. They are rumors, but if you take a serious look at it, there's no reason not to believe it. Hobby nitro is by no means immune to what's happening.

I have it from a very good and reliable source that the cost of hobby nitro is about to go up well over 50% in the next few months. I suggest that you stock up if nitro is your thing, and even then, it only has so long of a shelf life, so it won't do you that much good.

Gassers are the way of the future, they are easier to work on, cheaper overall to run, and for those of us big kids, much more manageable size parts to work with

I think you're right, 2 of my local hobby shops have short supply of nitro, and they say the new supply will be more expensive (about 15-20%)

On the thought of nitro vs 1/5, no contest, go gasser. I started with electric and got hooked, switched to 1/8 nitro for more power, speed, size, etc. Love it. But my 5th scale gives me the most enjoyment. I come home from work, switch it on, two pulls and it starts (regardless of weather conditions, hot, cold etc), 10 seconds later I'm doing doughnuts on the neighbors lawn. Nitros aren't "grab and go" enough for me anymore
