OK, Vic, you lost me, but I've been under the weather all week.

Now first thing in the morning, I get it!!, thats ok Vic I was born in the upper state, to the left of yours, on the other side of the lake. But I was brought to Texas, right at 1 year old, and don't plan to leave!

In my opinion, the same prop rule for Club 40 would give some folks an advantage. After working with GMS engines for a year, and Thunder Tiger for the last 2 months, the GMS likes to pull a higher pitch prop at a lower RPM. The Thunder Tiger seems to prefer a lower pitch prop at a higher RPM. My GMS has been competitive with the TT engines when turning a 10 X 6 prop at about 15, 300 peak. The Thunder Tiger doesn't seem to come into its own until you prop it to turn above 16,000. To get there you need a 4 to 4.5 pitch prop. I tried to use a 10 X 5 on a TT at the Waco race last week and got lapped in the first race by a TT turning a 10.5 X 4.5. I changed to a 10.5 X 4.5 and was in the hunt (except for erratic flying) for the rest of the day. Since GMS and Super Tiger engines are allowed, I think we need to allow those engines to turn whatever prop makes them competitive......

Over here it's a one engine (TT) and one prop (APC 9X6) show so far. An all pilot race.

Well, I was going to stay out of this one till it "settled out", but after receiving several phone calls and e-mails I need to say a couple of things.

I do NOT like the idea of limiting club 40 planes to just one size prop. Part of the fun and excitement of this class is experimenting with new things (props, engines etc.) to see what works best for you and YOUR style of racing.

We have shown again and again that increasing airspeed by 2-3 mph either way, will NOT guarantee a win. If it did, the LA Racer (at least 3 mph faster than the SRM2) would win every one of our races!

The main thing in this discussion that I do not endorse is modifying props. Our rules are based on AMA 424 rules modified for our aircraft. IMO - Modifying prop's beyond removing the flashing and sanding one side to balance it is not allowed under current rules.

If we want to use a modified prop, it needs to go to the group for a vote. This is one of the things we were trying to avoid with this class; The "Slippery slope" that leads to ever increasing speeds and high dollar aircraft with special modifications that scare the "Average" pilot out of racing.

We need to talk about this in person before it goes any further - like next weekend?

I would "suggest" we leave any modifications to the higher echelon classes of racing. There is plenty of room for experimentation without going this route.

Question..... We are just getting started with club 40 racing down in Texas City. My understanding is that you have to use a spinner not a prop nut. I fly 424 and use prop nuts on most all my planes from motor glider thru 1/4 scale. Is this option open or not........would really like to stay with my prop nuts..

Thanks for your help

Spinner or prop nut, as long as it covers the threads. See rule 7.4 of 424 rules.

Well let us know when the races are so we can come down and play, I'd love a race where I didn't have to drive 3 hours to get there!!

Mike I just sent you an email. ED

MHWTX - if you will e-mail me, I will send you a complete listing of the rules, Acceptible mods etc. that we are using pretty much throughout the state. Sure makes traveling to other clubs easier when all are using the same rules!
