Has anyone put a brushless outrunner in their PZ warbirds?

I am thinking of doing this and wanted to know what bracket to use or do i have to costum make one?

The stock brushed ones work well now but i don't know if they will last.

( running 11.1v lipo with brushed esc now )

THnks

I run a E-flight 15 power motor and castle 54 amp ESC. Sweet set up but had to buy a alum mount , they keeped breaking with just a little bump.

G'day mate, which PZ 'plane do you have? I have used the running gear from a PZ Typhoon 2 in both the PZ Mustang and Spitfire. Would probably work just fine in the FW-190 but I haven't tried it yet. You need to make a backing plate to mount the gearbox in both cases because the Typhoon gearbox has only three mounting screws (one top centre, one on each side at the bottom), instead of the four mounting screws like the standard 'box. I just used a thin piece of aluminium as the backing plate.

The combination works well. Performance is much improved, obviously. Vertical climbouts are easy. And it keeps all the parts somewhat 'stock' (at least, within the ParkZone brand) so you can buy replacements at any local hobby store. Big prop' looks cool, too

Just a suggestion. I'm sure many other setups work just as well and might even be cheaper.

I became a bit ticked off with the standard performance of my spit and tried just about every 'perfomance' battery available, only achieving marginally increased climb rates at best. So I went the whole hog:
I've bolted a brushless inrunner to the spit. I used an eflm 2005 and the standard gearbox which had to be slightly modified as there's a 'lip' running round the inside pinion end of the housing that had to be carefully removed as the eflm is fractionally larger than the stock motor in diameter. Once thats done it mounts in the same way. The standard pinion gear had to be drilled out to sit on the thicker motor shaft, but its a piece of cake to do.
I used a futaba 6ch rx and speed controller, plus carbon fibre reinforced strips set deep into the wings (essential!!) and back filled them with epoxy. The standard prop reached terminal velocity at about 1/4 throttle after I hooked the whole lot up to a Kokam 2400 11.1v li-poly, so I changed that for a tougher deeper pitched prop of the same diameter (with some mods, as I wanted to keep the original spinner). The end result is a spit that looks like a standard PZ apart from the prop.

Well, I've only just managed to take it out about an hour ago, launched it and held my breath. To say that its awesome is an understatement. After a few fly pasts at 1/4 juice, I pulled back and opened up. It started a long gradual loop that apexed about 200 ft + up with no visible loss of power. Next, I pointed skywards from level flight and opened up again. It continued to climb vertically until almost out of sight again with no visible loss of thrust, until I shut down and stalled into prop earthwards mode.

If like me, anyone out there becomes frustrated at being blown about the field at every slight puff, or resorting to 'high speed' dives just to get a halfway decent low level loop out of their warbird, I can't recommend the above enough. It's opened up a third dimension and watching that shape effortlessly loop way, way up into a cumulous sky is worth the fairly minimal effort, plus the increased and now very useable altitude allows for slow roll outs off the top of loops, something that was only achievable after a long slow climb to a safe altitude before.
cheers

p.s. never done anything like this before, not a tekkie either, so I guess anyone can do it!

red...why does it have to be a out runner, and not an inrunner using the stock gearbox ??

Don't want to chance the stock gear and bearings failing.

Thanks for the responses.
