I am looking at a used RC that needs it's O.S. 30 rebuilt. I would be new to nitro, but have a hobby shop and RCU if I get confused. About how much would it cost to rebuild it? Could I handle the rebuild? I have some experience with 1:1 engines. Thanks

You have to inspect it to find out what you need. Could be just a piston and sleeve. Maybe a con-rod. Might also need bearings. My rule of thumb is to price up the parts and if they total less than 50% of the replacement cost of engine, go for the re-build.

This may explain why cheap engines are often not worth rebuilding.

I just bought a new OS 30VG late last year. Was about $225. I'd spend $112.50 to rebuild it when the time comes.

Oh...yes, a rebuild isn't hard. You may want some advice on bearing removal should you need to swap them out. There's lots of info and articles on the net that cover it step by step.

I think that it might add up to be a little pricey. I'll have to find out what needs replacing. You said you'd spend that much, but would it cost that much, worst case? About how many gallons more would the motor take? Thanks

Here's the parts list and prices at Tower Hobbies:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0005P?I=OSMG2078&P=Z

If the engine is worn out, the minimum is a piston and sleeve @ $65. Most people would change out the connecting rod at the same time and that's an extra $22. So, typically you'd pay $77 plus shipping (and possibly tax) to get the parts to rebuild an OS 30VG.

Worst case?.....check out the rear bearing.....a whopping $51 and another $21 for the front bearing. Adding all this up, you could easily pay $149 just for parts.

How long will it last? I really can't say. Sorry.

if you're gonna spend that money on parts go ahead and replace all the rubber seals and o-rings too
including for the carb
and get new head shims while you're at it

the thing about rebuilding an engine is there's no guarantee on it
you could spend $100 - $200 on parts and if the engine tanks for some unseen/unknown reason
you have no recourse

argess's 50% rule of thumb is good and rebuilding one of these engines is stunningly easy
but
for a nitro newb i recommend just spending the few extra dollars and getting a new, warrantied engine

Thanks for the responses. I'm not going to get that one and think I'm going to stick with the cars I have for now.
