Hello all

I am working on my first full 3D cad of an r/c aircraft, using Blender (a free modeller). Now that I have a 3D model (available in many formats, blend, obj, 3ds, etc...), what is the best technique to draw plans from this model ?
My idea is to print side/top views using wireframe mode + making 'sections' across the fuselage and across the wings to get formers and ribs.
What would you advocate ?

That's the way I would do it.

You need to break it into parts (fuselage, wings, etc.) first.
If you can do an "offset" surface with your CAD program, you can generate the INSIDE surface of the skin, based on what kind of material you are using (1/16" balsa sheet, 2 mm plywood, etc.). Then create/locate the formers and ribs as simple planes, intersect them with the surfaces and work 2D on the parts to get lightening hole cutouts, etc. Make spars and longerons 3D and your intersect planes will pick up those elements too.
Over time you can build up a library of components that you have measured and digitally recreated. That way you can package engines, servos, clevises, fuel tanks, wheels, etc. It is great to be able to package an engine, rout the fuel tubing and create a throttle linkage - all on the tube.
After I get a design going, I break out all the parts to cut and place them flat in the top view to make cutting lines (laser cutting). There is a lot of 2D work like that before you have an actual usable "model".

Thanks for your help. I still have to figure out how to make that skin with Blender...
