could a servo short out like that and send signal from one channel to the other? if so what would be a good way to check it? maybe check the resistance in each servo?

Just sounds like a simple mix up of the plugs to me. Steering is channel 1, throttle channel 2 and reverse channel 3. The 2 steering servos plug into a y harness that then plugs into channel 1. Also be sure as mentioned that both tx and rx are on the SAME channel. If you switched receivers make sure you use one on the right band and shift, 75mgz band, not 27 or 72. JR and airtronics use the same shift, futaba hitec and some others use a different shift(+ or - shift). They are not compatible with each other and will cause the problems you describe also. Just some ideas so you don't waste money on servos you don't need. If you did change to a different brand receiver, it is probably on a different band width or different shift, meaning it just wont work.

Just swap the servo plugs around and see if the problem follows the servo or the socket it was plugged into.

Make sure that the wires from the receiver pack arnt laying on the chassis, or any other metal/carbon fiber piece. That was happening to me when I first bought my truck, so I mounted it on top of the receiver box thingy on the front( ). Just to be sure, are your servos going crazy and glitching? Or is it just that the servos wont do what your trying to make it do?

make sure the servos dont have any major water dammage. that makes them do interesting things!
