Brad, I've stood besides those very Spits. Such history in that place, you can almost her Bader yelling at people!

Pete, Nudger, I was there in Nov, Dec of 2006 and it was an awesome experience. Nothing was flying as the weather was cr@p but to be so close to all those wonderful machines was a life long dream come true.

Nudge, nice exhaust stacks there mate, how many are you going to make??

Brad

Nudge,

What is the material you work with to make your base molds? It looks like clay

Hi steve
thanks for the compliment but i dont think Im really worth it,just try my best.As for the pilot master his main body and parts are of clay but all the fine detail{mea west, scarf, folds etc]are made from a two part resin called magic sculpt, and the paracute straps from a product called duro, which still remains flexable when dry.

Finished the sutton harness pattern and have sent it off to the casters.Took a few pics before it went .should look good when painted, such a noticable accessory to the cockpit area.

Nudger,

Your work is staggering. I'm still interested in having you make some stacks for me. Are you sure you can't do it for a G-62?

All,

Does anyone know of any reference material or photos of any Black pilots flying Spits in WWII?

Brad
Do you know what the weight of your spit is going to be,and how much weight was saved by building your own stab?

Cheers Nudge

Hi Nudge,
I think, by going on the calculations from post 255 onwards on previous pages that I would be saving well over 5.5oz (156grams)
Have a read mate. You might come up with a different answer but basically I saved about 40grams by building my own tail plane and lightening the elevators and shortening the elevator actuating rod. Then I used lighter (and straighter) material for the rudder as well. This apparently will save 2.7 times that weight in the nose.

Hope that makes sense.

In saying that I still have not done final weigh in or balance.
I am finally working on the canopy frame. Finally!

Cheers,

Brad

Not being able to source any PVA mould release in this hick, one horse town of mine and talking to a supplier down south who said they would have to send some up as 'Dangerous Goods' I went on advise (yes from you too Peter) and used good ol' Vaseline gel to act as a release for my fiberglass fanopy frame I am making. If this does not work at least all I have destroyed is my canopy second that Leo sent me with the kit one.
I started off by shaping all the required 6oz cloth I would use (3 layers in all) and a couple of sheets of .6oz (read point six) to start off with and final cover.
First was to smooth some .6 over the whole canopy and get rid of all the wrinkles with just the aid of the Vaseline to hold it in place, then lightly brushed on some West Systems resin. This was followed by the front frame over the canopy and then the sides with a bit heavier application of resin. Three layers later and the final .6oz cover and I was finished. Resin was only applied to the area of the frame and a bit more but not much. Not the whole canopy,,,, you would be asking for trouble there. I have read that the end result can be a bit flimsy but usable from the other guys who have used these materials, and this I shall use.
I final positioned the front windscreen and marked the frame outlines with a marker so I could see where to roughen the surface for gluing with Canopy Glue. Roughed with sand paper on a stick (thin stick to stay between the lines) and then wiped over with Methylated Spirits to remove the marker pen I applied not too much glue and positioned it and clamped it (for a couple of days)

So that is another job out of the way.

Hope my canopy frame works!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Brad

I have not tried it yet, but I have understood that common aerosol hair spry is PVA and can be used for mold release. I intend to try it on a trial piece to see if it works before I commit to a cowl project I want to lay up.

Best regards,

Richard

PVA dangerous goods?

How can a water based glue be dangerous?

Hope the vaseline works ok. I've tried it a couple of times and guys in the UK get good results so fingers crosed for you.

I think it is a bit more than a glue Pete. It must have some special property to allow it to dry and release.

Anyway,,, the Vaseline worked and of course the frame fit on my canopy is perfect.
But,,, I am lucky I had that second canopy. As you can see from the pictures it didnt quite survive the 'release'.

Next is to carefully trim to shape, sand and fill and paint.

Cheers,

Brad

Initial sanding, trimming and fitting of the canopy frame was quite fun actually.
I think at this stage it looks like it will work so now I need to find some decent reference pictures to get the final dimensions right (read close )

Ever onward,,,, must finish plane,,,,, must finish,

Brad

Yeah I know Mate,,, as I was sanding the canopy frame with a sanding disk in my battery drill the dust and cr@p was going all over the Mustang's box and components inside.
I just looked and sighed and kept on sanding.

NOW,,, how 'bout you and this frink'n P47?????????????

Cheers,

Brad

Hi Nudger. New to this thread. Just got my Y/A Spitfire and this thread has got me itching to get started. That's for sure! Super job on the thread Brad...heck, all you guys. Anyway, the reason I'm on now is to see if NUDGER has any Charlies left to sell? I'm interested. If so, reply or send PM

Thanks

Bill

LOL Brad, well at least the P47 is in the home straight now. Will begin wing rivets this weekend, maybe even do a little tonight if I'm up to it. This bug thing I have been fighting for last month has really hit me hard.

after wing rivets it is time to shoot some colour and apply marking, systems fitout then go fly the sucker. Gessus my little bloke was like 2 years onld when I started that build, he is over 8 now!!

PVA is polyvinylacetate. Maybe the vinylacetate is considered a hazardous to health issue like carcigenic or something. I don't know, but some get all excited about any form of vinyl in liquid form. Perhaps an MSDS would tell us more?

Sincerely,

Richard
