Depends on how much building and engineering you want to do.

Dave Manley from Small World Models makes some great almost-ready-to-run subs. Expect to spent at least $750 for the sub (and WTC) plus another few hundred dollars for radio, electronics, supplies, etc. While not cheap, these are high quality subs and have a good resale value.

Caswell sells some plastic kits from Trumpeter, Revell, etc. along with Merriman fittings (dive planes, drive shafts, etc.) as well as "SubDrivers" which are water tight compartments/cylinders. Expect to spent $550 for the model and WTC plus another few hundred dollars for radio, electronics, supplies, etc.

There's also the Dumas Akula, and that costs less than $150, but you'll need to find a WTC for it as well as spend another few hundred dollars for radio, electronics, supplies, etc. This is probably not an "easy" build compared to the Caswell and Small World Models options, but it's the cheapest among what I've listed.

I don't know how far Annapolis is from Forrest Hill, MD, but I encourage you to join SubComEast for some get-togethers at a local pond. Our next meeting will likely be in mid-July.

I like that first company . To bad the bay's water wasn't more like the bahamas water. I would run it at our pier but the water can get sorta dirty so I can only see the model is it was suberged for more then afew feet at best.
I would need a four channel radio with 3 servo's and an ESC to get that model running right? Annapolis is near the bay bridge so I think forest hill is to far for me.

To get a Small World Models submarine running you'd need 3 standard servos, receiver, 4 channel radio, battery, and ESC. However, I think an ESC is included. While not required, the following are highly recommended for submarines: pitch controller (APC-4 is a good one) and a failsafe to blow the ballast tank in case of signal loss. The pitch controller and failsafe can be purchased from http://www.mikessubworks.com/

I like to run my subs in pools only, so I don't feel a failsafe is that necessary. However, many run their subs in lakes and ponds and when I run a sub in a pond, I feel very nervous not having a failsafe.

Well I think that the failsafe is a bit of a must for me if I get a sub. I plan on running it in the cleaner part of my creek and fresh water lakes. The Last thing that I want is to lose the sub. The pitch controller that just levels it off right?

Yes, the pitch controller just keep the sub level. Without it, it's hard to keep the sub level and the sub will often just porpoise up and down.

Hi,

After building one of Daves Bluebacks I can honestly say you cannot go wrong. From kit box to test tank in two days (including painting & ballasting) Here is a picture of mine.

Depends on the water and the position of the sub. In a pool, if the sub is at your feet, you could probably broadcast down 3-10 feet. If the sub is 10 yards away, then you might lose signal if the sub is only 2 feet under water. Chemicals in a pool can reduce radio range. Do a search on these message boards and subcommittee message boards for more information and also check out these FAQs:

The pool I go to will not allow ANY sort of RC vehicle on its grounds. Do most indoor pools allow subs or do I have to go to a speical one? OR if I could see it could I run it in the bay?
