I didnt have anything ready except a big stick with a saito .65 on it, so I mainly went to meet Raindave cause he built me a Sig Wonder and its a beauty, maybe he can post a pic of it on here,,lots of faces I knew but not names, we got one of the local gurus to maiden the wonder and he made it look like a trainer, a tribute to Dave's building skills too, but 30 seconds into the flight he got a serious hit, he recovered and went around again and got another hit so he brought it in to the taller grass deadstick (no wheels),, an older gentleman had a huge balsa usa 1/4 scale bipe ,,so cool to watch...no theme at all( no racing, no tricks, no kind of events at all), basically just a bunch of guys, one guy with a stick, had the worst take off ever, he went off the runway aiming at a half a dozen big heli's, barely got off the ground in time,,,there was serious ohhing and ahhing....lots of leckys, trainers, extras, and a 40 year old patteren plane that was so fuel soaked there were places where the covering wouldnt stick, but it flew like a champ, another pattern plane or 2, Dave was gonna bring out the sureshark, only 1/2a there and fly it about the time I was heading home, it was a good time....I'm gonna fly that stick this week, one is a hangar 9 with an OS.46 and the other is a great planes with a saito .65........Rog

I put in a flight with the Sure Shark which is on the same channel as the Wonder and didn't get any hits. Weird. We had the Wonder sitting on the table and turned on the rx, but not the tx. The surfaces were jerking all over the place. It was strange. I'm going to install new radio gear and do some more testing. Allen, the guy who did the maiden said it needed no trim at all, not even a single click. When we get the radio sorted out it will be a fun plane.

Here're a couple of photos. It weighs 29.8ozs with the LA .15 and HS-81 servos, ready to fly (no fuel). That's around a 12.7oz wing loading.

Nice Wonder! The BARKS are pretty well known, they seem to have something going on all the time.

Even in the house last night, when I turned on the rx, the surfaces were flapping all over the place (tx turned off). So, I took out the Hitec 05S rx and installed a Berg. The problem went away. I can't wait to fly it later this week. I'm thinking about enlarging the plans 12%, which will give it a 42" span, and building one for a BB 25 (I have a 25-size tuned pipe). I have read about people putting Webra .32's in stock Wonders. By the time you add the tail weight to balance that, you'd have a 3+ lb brick. Going up 12% will keep the wing loading under 15oz sq."

Yep, a good .25 sized plane can be built to come out at 2.5 pounds. A piped .25 with a 8x6 or 8x7 should put a plane like that into the 120-130 mph zone. 8 inches might be pushing it for diameter, I doubt there will too many off the shelf props that are ideal. MAS has a thin bladed prop that works well and is easy to modify.
Just wondering if those rudders are big enough to really throw the plane around? If all they are good for is to make the plane wiggle, I would delete them and trim the plane with thrust angle. It looks like the plane has the potential to do some wild flat spins if the rudders work right. Remember the Pattern Bat? That little plane was supposed to be a hoot, too.

cp, it's three channels, no rudders. But, I'm sure someone has added rudders.

I enlarged the parts 12% and printed them out. Time to start cutting wood. Here's a NIB ASP .25 and an old macs pipe.

Edited to say, this really doesn't belong in this forum. If I do a build thread I'll find a better place.

That engine ought to make mincemeat out of some props APC has to offer in the 7 inch range. I had a Picco .21 in a indy car and couldn't find anyplace big enough to run it. It really screamed.

This is a follow-up post and I know it's not 1/2A, but I just wanted to share some photos.

Well, I took the easy route and used an LA .25 that has flown quite a bit and is well broken in. I just want to get this thing in the air. Later, I can try different engines if I need more speed.

It weighs 39.2ozs less fuel, so I made it under the 40oz target. The wing loading is 13.3ozs sq. ft., which isn't bad. I scaled it up to 112% for a 42" span. I covered it with translucent Worldtex and used some of the extra stickers from rog's kit. I'm a big fan of very basic color schemes; nothing flashy. I'm using Futaba digital S3151's on elevator and ailerons and a Hitec HS-81 for throttle, a full-size 4-cell rx pack, and a Berg rx. With smaller servos and pack I could probably lose a couple of ounces.

I couldn't get out to the field today. I will try to get out next week and maiden the thing.

Anyway, here it is. I'm pleased with the way it came out.

What just a cotton pickin' minute, RD. You can't just show us a teaser shot of a piped Picco .21 that you have.....then in the very next post show us a Wonder outfitted with a LA .25!!
I almost threw up some very expensive beer.
Needless to say, you now have a moral obligation to hook that plane up to the Picco, then repent.

Consider it a test flight engine, until I get it trimmed out and fix any bugs, sort of like putting the prop on backwards on a free flight model to see how the first flight goes. Besides, it balances on the mark with the LA.

I still need to fabricate an adapter for my header to fit the Picco's round exhaust port. I might have to pay someone to make a custom adapter plate for me. Or, just run it with the stock muffler.

I'll get there, cp.

The Picco must date back to when there was .21 competition? I haven't heard any firsthand flight reports about them. They scream in RC cars.

I have two Picco .40's and two of their .60's, I would love to get the .21 They really are great engines, mine all throtle well and the top end is ballistic, I put one of the .40's on my Viper to race this season, It looked like the rules allowed it, the boys seen me fly it in practice and banned that baby and re wrote the rules before the race to only allow a certain few engines, and the Picco was specifically written in as one of the banned ones. All I could do is Laugh, I wish they still made the Aero line of Picco's . If ya ever wanna sell that .21, just let me know where to send the coin for it
