I did a search and a couple of posts almost touched on this, but can I remove the gas solenoid when my P80 has started up?
I.e I have for some time just hooked up my gas directly from the bottle and not had a gas bottle in the plane, but what about taking the entire gas system off the plane completely, filter solenoid and pipework. If I plugged it all in to start and had a fly lead from the ecu I could unplug it all when the engine had stabilized.

will the ecu complain at all ?? (V5.0)

Just thought I would run this idea past some people in the know, first.

Nick

all you have to have is the check valve, if you remove it then hot air will exit the Festo after the turbine is running and it'll melt the fittings/tubing. it's VERY easy to off board start, takes about 1-2 starts to become an expert.

FYI you don't need the solenoid valve hooked to the ECU at all, save it for if/when you need a replacement on the fuel side, just use a regulated propane valve, it hooks directly to the check valve and YOU regulate the flow, when you initiate the start as soon as the starter engages, open the propane valve, you'll get ignition, once the fuel pump turns on (red LED) you can turn the propane off and tuck the pig tail with the check valve still on the turbine into the plane and you're ready to go.

ok thanks for that. That will save a bit of weight and complexity from my boomer.

On the V6.0 the propane solenoid pulses the gas in on startup, so it is a valuable aid in metering the correct amount of gas to get a good start. I left the solenoid and filter in, and cap it with a check valve and do an off board start.

it pulses on all versions, the higher the % set in the ECU the quicker the pulses allowing more propane into the mixture, it's not necessary to have it and as mentioned above, it takes about 2 starts to become an expert at it with nothing but the propane regulator and check valve.

Well, I have heard of people that claim they can do this and I am sure they can, but I would not recommend it as a general rule.

You could hook up the solenoid and then remove it after start up, but I am not sure why you waould want to introduce that complexity.

Regards,

all I was thinking is that I would make a little board with the filter and the solenoid on it, and then a fly lead from my ecu , then I could start the engine in the normal fashion and then disconnect the solenoid. It just saves a bit of weight and pipework from what is looking like a cramp installation.

but you don't need to do all that, just hook the regulator directly to the check valve and then straight to the propane Festo on the turbine, there isn't a need to have the lead to the ECU and the solenoid at all. IF you want to use it off board there is no reason you can't but again it's just un-necessary.
