Hi Chad,

I have been running all my Futaba equipment in IMAC at 6.5 volts using the Smart-Fly Power Expander and Turbo Regulator. These include the 9650, bunches of 9156's. Lately I switched to A123 batteries, which when fully charged can be around 7.18 volts, and removed the Turbo Regulator. I also converted my Abbra to a single 1100 mah A123 pack, no regulator, and this setup includes 2 9151 on ailerons, 1 9250 on elevator, 1 9650 on throttle, 1 9156 on rudder - no problems yet. The voltage draw per pattern flight is also very low.
thanks,
Jim

The only problem I see is actually warranty, when somebody ask questions on RCU for example, that person is looking for advices because is usually starting on the subjet he needs information, you guys have a lot experience in the subject, but we definitly do not know what somebody else is going to use, so a certain and known risk does exist.

Even thoug Futaba servos can take 6V and I don't doubt it , going against the manufacturer recomendations is not advisable in my opninnion as the first will do is void warranty, and when we look at our 2meter models around $3000+ is a risk I will not take, speccially when it is not necessary.

Again, I do respect your positions and knowledge, but please keep in mind those little things, if say in RCU that I have and Showtime with a DA85 and flies beautifully, I bet somebody, will ask for pictures of it before thinking about it.

Regards to all

Hi Apereira

There has been numerous discussions about this in the Futaba support forum, and Futaba has more or less stated that "regulated 6V" systems are OK.

Reason is a 4 cell (4.8V) NiCD pack is usually close if not 6V when fully charged, so using an unregulated 4.8V pack is going to deliver close to the voltage of a regulated 6V system anyways. Even under load it is still going to be 5.5V, going to a 5.7 or 6V regulator is a marginal increase in voltage.

Like I say its a very misleading statement, it really should read not for use with unregulated 5 cell packs.

Where is the huge price difference people are talking about, a JR8611A from Horizon is $114.95, a Hitec 5955 (comparable servo) is $114.95 from Horizon.

Just my opinion

Just goes to show, don't buy from Horizon, if you shop around you will find the 5955 for $89.00, (Troy Built Models) but, you will not find any Futaba or JR servo's discounted by any where near as much, the margins are just not there I have been told.

Fair enough, but you're still only talking a $125 difference for 5 servo's in a 1K minimum airplane that relies on the most accurate build and components possible. Don't get me wrong, I'm not down on Hitec, I have 5955's in one of my jets to try out. I was going to use them on a Python Pattern bird as well, but after doing some testing with the 5955's vs a JR8231 for centering I decided against it. For testing I set up the servo's in a hard mount (no grommets) with a 1" servo arm on them. I zero'd out a digital dial indicator against the servo arm and proceeded to move the servo, the JR servo's came back to within .0005" from 0.00 each time one side or another, a worst case difference of .001" (about 1/3 the thickness of a sheet of paper). The hitecs came back between .002 - .003" of center each time, I could always get it back to center by just touching the stick in the opposite direction, but that's a worst case scenario of .004" - .006" of difference in the throw. That is nothing for an average sport plane, but a HUGE discrepancy in a pattern plane. I remember when I first started flying pattern, I didn't believe that coreless servo's were that big of an advantage over regular servo's. My first Meridian pattern ship had regular JR517 servo's in it and I was always adjusting trims. When I switched to 4131's those problems went away. Then a good friend of mine told me, if you really want to see how much the trim is affected with nearly no difference in throw, get your plane trimmed out perfectly, fly it, land, and put a 1" wide strip of masking tape down the full length of one aileron and fly it again. The trim was out, not much, but you could see it. That right there taught me the importance of good servo's.

Anyway, as always, your mileage may vary, but for me, saving $125 in a total airplane for one of the most important components just isn't worth it.

Forget those prices! Go to servocity, they're having a blowout and introductory sale.
