How did 3MM manage to get 3/4 lbs weight savings over the DA100? What alloy is used? The cooling fins look pretty thin and the mounting lugs are thick.

I am not exactly sure what they did to save weight. As most are aware the BME 115 weighs/weighed only 4 pounds due to almost obsessive attention to weight.

I do know this much. I started talking with them about the importance of weight over a year ago. They re-cast the cylinders to save weight, I know that much, and that's an expensive step to take. I suspect that they worked hard to reduce reciprocating weight because this allows the crankshaft to balance properly with less counterweight. Just a guess, but there are a lot of tricks to building a light engine that mostly require attention to detail.

I like to think that me staying on them about weight had an effect on the design. I had a feeling that it would be possible to hit somewhere between the DA-100 and the BME-115. The old BME 102 weighed about 5 lbs. and was an excellent engine.

Thanks Tom. I'm keeping a close watch on this engine.

Will the exhaust flanges be compatible with DA or 3W engines for those who want to run canisters or pipes?

Exhaust flange is same as 3mm TOC-53. The shape and size is the same as 3W, but the face is parallel to the cylinder bore, not angled like 3W. The engine will be supplied with mufflers and I'm already working on headers for it.

Hopefully by the time the engine is available as a production unit I'll have everything that's needed.

Do you have any ballpark estimate on when I could buy one from you? 3 months? 6 months?

I estimate 3 months, but that may be optimistic. They are working diligently but carefully, and they/we do not want to release something with problems.

How is this looking at this point, and do you have any new 100 class airframes coming out to slap it into?

Good question. My last communication with them was about 3 weeks ago. At that time they were working on a set of rev. 2 prototypes, the first one ran well but the foundry made some mistakes making the castings, at least that was my understanding. The new engines may be running by now, but my contact who speaks english has been out for 3 weeks and will probably be gone for another week or two, so I won't have any real solid info for a while. There are lots of people working on it but I can't communicate with most of them.

Yes, we have two new 100cc planes coming in September. A 105" Extra 260 replaces the Extra 300, basically the same plane with some small engineering changes and a new look.

And then we are at last releasing the 102.5" Edge 540 which is a really nice lightweight 3D beast.

Thanks for asking. It would be really nice if the new engines became available with the new planes, wouldn't it?

Only this. I spoke with them a few days ago, they expected to receive revised engines in the next week or so, Then will begin testing, which will take an unknown time.

You guys need to understnd that a delivery date can not be predicted until the engine has passed testing. Until them there's no way to be sure it will pass the test, a failure could set the whole project back.

I'll let you know when I know something.

Sort of good news. As of a couple daus ago they have all the parts in, now it's a matter of testing and QA. Let's just hope that all goes well.

Just recently I spoke with Bob about the dispalcement of this 3M engine. It's 106CC not 114CC (confirmed).

Hence the title of this thread, "NEW 3MM106cc twin coming".

Who's Bob?
