Alright so i'm going to buy an RC18R roller, MAMBA 8k comp x system, and make an Intellect 9.6v.
i might go with a carbon fiber chassis but not sure if i can afford it yet. my question is whats the best
gearing? i want it to go as fast as possible with still some torque in there. Heat wont be an issue,
i'm mounting fans inside the car. any info or input would help greatly.

Also upgrading: steering, diffs, outdrives and necessary weaknesses when introduced to brushless... let me know what your guys experiences with a brushless rc18r as far as breakage! thanks

heres what I would recommend based on my own experience with the 18R and brushless setups..

keep the stock diffs:
the stock diffs are very strong, just make sure you keep them adjusted well.. tighten them to between one eighth and one quarter turn off fully tight.. also use the outdrive sleeves always to keep the out drive sides from bending out.. if you want to go MIP on the diffs, that's fine, but honestly I like the stock diffs.. I run my car hard and refquently and they have held up great.

MIP steed CVDs for front and rear:
dremel or file down the nubs on the dogbone ends so they will fit in the outdrive sleeves. stick with steel for CVDs.. I have broken alum ones several times.. so far the MIPS are holding up great tho!

DP gear cover:
if you drive on asphault this is a life saver!

DP draglink and Hitech HS-65mg servo:
the stock steering system on the rc18 is really lame... I would get a DP draglink, a stronger servo, and get a metal sleeve to go around the stock servo saver C-spring, so stiffen that up.. that will make things a lot better!

3racing wheel/tire set:
ditch the stock wheels for a set of 3racing 5 spoke wheel/tire (pre-glued) set...less rotational mass so much better than the stock ones when turning high rpms.. also they have a much nicer grip/slide threshold.. my car grips the road well with them, but also doesn't flip as easy when powersliding corners on asphault.. anyways.. I can't say enough good things about them.. they're reasonably priced also.

adjustable turnbuckles:
3racing or AE adjustable turnbuckles are really nice for fine tuning your car's ride with camber, castor, toe-in/toe-out..

adjustable stocks:
the stock shocks aren't too bad, but it's nice to have some good threaded ones.. I like 3racing.. they don't leak and they compress very smoothly.

grearing:
I was very happy with 13/55 on my 6800kv motor with 3s lipo.. the motor ran cool and my top speed was good.. I geared up to 15/55 and have noticed a little cogging, very slight when the batt is getting down to 30% or so.. I am thinking about going 14/55 just to find a happy medium.. that seems like a good compromise of speed and less stress on the motor..

Wow thanks so much peelin_out for such a thurough response! answered all my questions, alright i'll stick with stock diffs. i'll stay with stock dogbones for now untill i can afford MIP cvds. also i have another simple question, I'm going to run a 10cell now 12v IB1400 pack. what gearing will i need for that? i am going to run some fans so it will help, because i know it will be hot in there. i want the absolute highest speed, without risking electronics or over heating. please get back to me ASAP and thanks!

np.. the 18r is my fav rc car and I mess with mine a lot.. I think the fact that the 18r has a lot less rotational mass at the end of each of the outdrives (shorter dogbones, axles, and smaller wheels) allows the stock diffs to really hold up well, even with powerful brushless setups on the car. going CVDs is just a matter of preference also.. as the a-arm travel is much less on the 18r, so there's less chance to pop one out.. anyways..

I think if you're actively cooling your motor and esc, maybe 17/55 would be the most agressive gearing I would attempt... maybe get a pinion pack like 15, 16, 17 and start low then build up.. I am at 15/55 now and I am going to need a fan if I go higher than that.. that's a 6800 w/ 3s.. it's pretty screaming fast with that setup also.. lol.

thanks man, for all the help!
i'm so excited, i've been waiting for a car version of the RC18 series to come out. as its a really good build, and i have loads of hopups from my RC18T left over
i'll do that with the pinions. so whats that mean the higher the pinion count the faster it will go?

yeah - basically any way you can get the main drive shaft to turn over faster makes the car have more top end. more teeth on the pinion will do that (one full revolution of the pinion turns more gears over on the spur) and less teeth on the spur also does that (takes less turns of the pinion to turn the spur over one full revolution).. I have never felt a loss of torque with gearing up, but I have noticed some minor cogging.. well, very small hesitations when the battery is nearing the end which I didn't notice when geared lower.. anyways... just keep tabs on your motor and esc temps when gearing up..

yeah - the 18R is such a fun car imo.. it drives / handles more like a real sports car than the 18T... but ofcourse they are not supposed to drive the same.. but I guess I gravitate more to sports car driving..
