Does anyone know anything about the Horizon Hobby J3 cub or super cub? Or the Fly Zone Cessna or J3 cub? Which is a better plane? Looking for an upgrade and also a plane for my son to fly. He has a little experience with a few estes planes, but I would like to get him something with a little more hobby quality I guess you could say. I don't want him learning any bad habits that the cheap planes with no control surfaces only power can create. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may want to look at the Cessna 182 from Airborne Models www.airborne-models.com/html/productdetails.asp?ProductID=132

It's really stable; just have one of your club instructors do inflight trimming, and go from there.

Please do not make the same mistake I did, just listen to everybody and their brother who says to get the Super Cub!!! Do not go with the Flyzone as it is very under powered, and has too short a wingspan making it a flying turd The Parkzone? or Hobbyzone? J-3 Cub has been recently upgraded to brushless and LIPO power!!! The only reason I stick with my Flyzone is that I'm Too Bull-headed, broke and committed to go with the Super Cub at this stage of the game. The Flyzone is NOT a beginner plane!

Just my 2 cents,

Hi Jeffhunter,

For your son, the HobbyZone SuperCub is BY FAR the best plane to get. Its the best beginner plane on the market and he will have a great time learning to fly with it.

For an upgrade for you, the questions that you need to answer are what are you upgrading from, what is your current skill level, what direction do you want to pursue, and how big a step are you willing to take. Of the planes that you listed, the SuperCub is the easiest to fly, the ParkZone J3 is a nice step up but you can accomplish the same thing if you put a brushless motor into the SuperCub. The FlyZone J3 has ailerons and is a nice flyer if you put in a brushless motor, Lipo battery and your own electronics.
