Hi Guys,

I want to know if anyone knows the mathmatics side to mixing and can you share it with me. I would like to increase the oil content from 17% to 18%. I have Cool Power fuel 10% and 15% with 17% oil content and want to and some castor oil to it to meet the OS requirement of 18%. I have an OS Max .91Surpass engine which is brand new sitting in the box for a year because I can not find 4 stroke fuel for it. I am going by the Company's spec for 18% oil. I cannot find any fuel with that much oil content in it at any of the local hobby shops. The hobby shops leave a lot to be desired around here and do not stock much if any fuel. So there is no where to get it. Tower has it but its extremely expensive and you have to buy 4 gallon cases. Any suggestions as to where I can find some Cool power (MV N-15% -O-18%) fuel or powermaster etc. I just want to locate some fuel to use in my .91Surpass 4-stroke before the year is over. If anyone knows of any hobby shops on Long Island that would have some 4-STroke fuel, please let me know.

Thanks a bunch

Ed

Don't bust a gut over the difference between 4-stroke and 2-stroke fuel it's simply the writing on the label.

If you're using CoolPower fuel then I strongly recommend that you add several ounces of castor to each gallon - which will bring the oi ratio to more than 18% but it will save you a world of pain.

Why?

Because CoolPower has *very* little protection against bearing corrosion.

Just do a search for "cruel power" here and you'll see what I mean.

While this isn't too bad in the case of a 2-stroke, changing the camshaft bearings on a 4-stroke (Saito's excepted because they're bushed) can be a real pig of a job and you really don't want to go there.

The extra castor won't hurt one little bit (except for making a bit of a mess on your model) but it will almost certainly extend the life of your bearings by a huge amount.

It only takes about 3% of castor (by volume) to provide a very worthwhile extra level of corrosion and wear-protection, that's why *all* my fuel has a trace of castor in it.

Maybe this is what you're looking for:

scroll down to custom fuel blending workshop
scroll down to the bottom of the page and go to add oil only

With the link from Prairie Mike you don't need the math, but since you asked, here it is. To calculate the amount of oil to add to a gallon of glow fuel to raise the oil percentage to a higher level: Fluid Ounces of oil to add = [(D% - S%) X 128] / (100 - D%) where D% is the desired oil percentage, and S% is the starting oil percentage. In your example, to go from 17% to 18% multiply 1 times 128 and divide that by 82. The answer is 1.56 fl. oz. Here's another example: To raise the percentage from 17 to 20%, multiply 3 times 128, and divide by 80. The answer is 4.8 fl. oz. If you are aiming for a final oil percentage of 18 - 22%, a good rule of thumb is to add 1.6 fl oz of oil for each percent you want to increase. This rule of thumb is not perfectly exact, but it is so close that your engine will never know the difference. Remember, both the formula and the rule of thumb assume that you are starting with a gallon (128 fl oz) of fuel.

if you have a mix of 17% oil i would increase this to 20% with the use of castor, so add an extra 3% of castor.
