Hi, I have an original Nitro Hawk that I bought back in about 1992. In the past week I've been getting it going again (after sitting for 6 years). It's running great now and has lots of power (still noticeably faster than my RC10GT), but I've worn out my clutch bell gear already. I have a collection of spare parts, but no clutch bells.

I'm finding now that it's not easy to find parts for my Nitro Hawk. I'd hate to just ditch it, so I'm wondering if anybody could recommend the best way to update the clutch/brake etc. to something more modern so that I can get parts easily? Should I change the engine as well? I've heard the TRX Pro .15 might be an option, or an OS engine. Could anybody recommend the best way to go? Or would it even be worth it to upgrade this truck?

Thanks!

The Pro .15 is a direct fit. Anything else would require the aftermarket Thorp O.S. mount kit. They're pretty hard to find anymore.
The original "backwards" clutch, and long cranksahft design is proprietary. You have to use Traxxas parts. There's still plenty around, last time I checked. Pro .15's are okay for 2WD, but they get ratty when abused, so it's best to just to buy a brand new engine for your Hawk.

Really? How is the power in a TRX .15? I still have the original Image .12 engine and it seems very reliable, and as far as I know it has really good power. It seems to be a shame to remove it. But I haven't used anything else really (in nitro), except for the RC10Gt, so I have nothing to compare to.

The guy at my LHS recommended an OS engine, .15 size I think. Which do you think is the best way to go?

i had a nitro stampede with a pro 15 and it lifted the front wheels easily. ive had quit a few nitros and nitro motors and the pro 15 was probably the one that was most reliable. held a tune great, it just doesnt have as much power as other motors but i will sacrifice power for reliability

TRX .15 the only option for the Hawk, when using the original mounts. The Image .12 was known for leaky gaskets in its time. If you make this truck a runner, put in the .15, and keep the .12 to the side. Image parts are getting very scarce.

thats my 2 cents

Thanks robbio. Why would you choose an OS over the TRX .15? If it's OS, then what about the OS18TZ, like yours? Do you think the Nitro Hawk diff could handle it?

I've been following your RC10GT build by the way, I've gotten piles of useful information from it (for my RC10GT). Pretty interesting. I might end up building mine pretty much the same as yours - it depends on how I feel about it after getting my VXL Rustler. I've never used any good electrics yet (only the Rustler XL-5), so we'll see how it goes.

well i had the .18 cv-rx but after doing some research and finding out that i wouldnt be able to race with it i decided to got with a .12 tz

and to be honest... i cant stand the trx... not theres anything wrong with it... fairly easy to tune i just dont like how often i have issues with it...

but i will be putting the .18cv-rx into my rustler

i jsut got some parts today that have been on back order for a bit (rc10gt parts) once i get home, if i get time ill put it all together and get some pics up

and im not sure about your diff... it really depends on how the condition of those old parts are and what kinda of driving you will be doing... if your going to get a big motor you might as well spend a few on gears... so you dont have to take it all apart after a few tanks to replace stripped gears

Yeah good point. I'm still not even sure of what I should be doing with the Nitro Hawk. Maybe upgrading it would just be a waste and maybe I should put it into something else.

I wonder if I should leave the Nitro Hawk as is and put work into the RC10GT instead and possibly get something newer.

Nitro Hawk is more of a nostalgic piece. You don't want to put more than Pro .15 power through it. A common problem with the N.H. when driven hard, was the top gear shredding. The internal gears are 64 pitch, not the best for strength.

Ok that decides it. I'll invest my time and money into the RC10GT and possibly something newer. I've got a hardened steel clutch bell coming for the Nitro Hawk - I'll leave it at that and just rip around with it sometimes. The engine works fine and I won't bother replacing it.

Thanks guys!
