Hello,

I have settled on and will be ordering the Hanger 9 P51 Mustang PTS ARF, however, I am undecided as to which size engine to install in this warplane/trainer; I would like opinions, please...

Thanks,

Gordon

My vote is for the inverted 72, since that is how my PTS is setup. I have yet to fly it but it should be soon and it balances with .5oz of lead in the tail..

I have trained 2 people with this plane and 1 is using the thunder tiger pro 46 and the other guy is using the supertigre 45.
Both have done very well. I do recomend using the 2 bladed prop though

I've had two of the PTS Mustangs. One with an Evo. 46 and one with an Evo. 52. I plan on building another this winter and will most likely put a YS 63 in it. I know that the YS isn't on your list, but is another option.

Cheers! BH

The PTS mustang is really an awesome plane. I have one with an O.S. 55 AX 2 stroke with a 12x8 master airscrew prop and the thing is a missle (minus all of the training gear). Hands down one of the fastest planes at our field (we're guessing but figuring between 80 and 100 mph), I've put it in a dive with a tail wind at full throttle and then yank back on the elevator sending it straight up in the air without the airframe buckling or the wings folding. My brother bought one to learn how to fly with and I was so impressed with the plane that I bought one for myself just for the thrill of it.

Jiver, I wanted to put a 52 Surpass four-banger in my grandson's P-51 PTS; but after looking at the options for a while, I decided the work needed to do it wasn't worth the effort.

An inverted installation is definitely the way to go with a four stroke on this model, IMO. Some folks have good luck with these; not me. I've always needed to use on-board glow heat, at low throttle settings, to have any success with an inverted four stroke engine. Some have said that's because I run my engines too rich. Could be; it is what it is.

Anyway, I settled on an old OS .46SF with a Pitts muffler. Any good .46-.50 or so two-stroke, or slightly larger displacement four stroke, is plenty of power for this model. The main problem I saw with a side-mount four stroke was the throttle linkage; I would have to get very creative there, due to the tank size and location.

YMMV...
