Ok i just won a 44*12 inch fiberglass mono hull for $21. I really need to keep this project low cost, so will this boat take a strimmer engine?
If not i am pretty stuffed.
Thanks
Alex

I've put a 25cc Homelite in a scratch built Vee that was 42 in. X 11.5 in. It was tight, but everything fit.

Do you plan on leaving it sub drive? It does look to me like it would take a trimmer engine. Does it have 5" rails for mounting the engine?

If it were up to me I would rework the drive. It looks like it has very tight radius curves. I would straighten it out a bit and move the prop back some. This would also give you some more room for the engine. But that’s just my $0.02

I am so against staying subdrive. But i think it will cost a lot to make it surfacedrive. Also unsure on how to set up surfacedrive for a boat like this.
I am not sure if it has rails, my dad is picking it up on Tuesday. I then won't see it until next weekend. .

You could make your own stinger or strut and rudder pretty easily. On a mono of this size, you are going to want the prop about 4-5 in. back from the transom. Set the height to where one blade of the prop is below the water line, everything else including the prop hub would be above the water.

As far as rails go, set them to be 5 in. apart and make them run from the transom on up past the engine. You can mount the fuel tank to these as well. The rails will add strength the hull too which is why you want them to run up a ways past the engine. On my AC hull the rails go up to about 6 in. from the nose. Most will say use 1/4" aircraft birch ply for this. The AC hull uses 1/8 ply with another 1/16" of glass, so total is about 3/16". You couldn't rip the rails out of the hull if you wanted to.

thanks for all that jdoug.
I will make it surfacedrive then. You have forced me into it, lol.
I can't wait to take a look at this. I live with the sea at the bottom of my garden and it is often rough, so was looking for a big boat to handle it.
When i saw this hull i had to get it for the price.

What about rudder length?
i was looking on here and it seems to be around 2-3 inch below lowest point, is this about right?
Thanks again for all the help

The rudder...I had the same question when I was building mine. I'll take a look at mine tonight, but if memory serves me correct, it is about 1.5 - 2 in. below the keel. My Homelite boat had the rudder inline with prop and it didn't steer well at high speed, but really well at an idle. I switched it over to the right and without changing the depth, it was a lot better turning both ways. I think with an inline rudder, it needs to be run quite deep to reach water that isn't chewed up by the prop so to speak. When run to the right, is in clean water and turns better because of it. It also picks up water better too.

You have to remember that a rudder offset to the right will just about come out of the water when turning left. I put turn fins left and right so the boat won't hop sideways, pick the rudder up, and unexpectedly swap ends when turning.

Alex surface drive is the way to go for sure also make your rudder 6" and keep it 2" bellow the prop and you will be fine mate, left turns are ok on mine but you must offset the drive 1/4" to right of keel line this overcomes prop walk or veering to the right which it will do if you run it dead centre. My first boat has a weedy motor ,its a scratch built woody, you can buy very reasonable hardware from our friends in the states too, checkout zippkits its good gear at great prices.Strut and offset rudder for £32 is dam good and postage is good too and Joe is a great guy to deal with.If you want nearer then try Dave Marles.

Motor is last thing you mount first buy your hardware and radio box gear etc sit it in the hull along with the motor and balance the hull at 28-30% from transom on a broom shaft then move motor till she balances then mark for mounting.First thing to mount is the strut and rudder then balance her as said above.Looking at your pics you have no engine rails in the hull? if not you will need to install some1/4" marine or birch ply rails using fibreglass.
