Hey, James

I highly recommend TRAC. They have a great field near the Seffner exit of I-4. Very heli friendy, I've found. They have a website at http://trac_tampa.homestead.com/

Where are you in relation to downtown? There's TRACs to the East by Sefner, Triple Creek to the West by St Pete, and Bay City Flyers to the North by Land O Lakes. I fly at the BCF main field and it is very heli-friendly, not to mention only 8 miles from my house. BCF also has a heli-only field at the city dump (off Linebaugh just West of the Veteran's expressway) that's open Monday through Saturday during the dump's normal operating hours. Call the guy that runs Charlie's Discount Hobbies (On Waters Ave just West of the Veteran's). He's a heli guy and can give you a really good run down of any other heli fields.

Welcome to the Tampa area!

You're within a couple of minutes of the Linebaugh field and Charlie's Hobby shop (lucky you!). Here's a link to the field's information (location, restrictions, hours, etc) http://www.baycityflyers.org/id16.html

Since it's closed on Sundays, most of the heli guys come up to the main field up off of SR52 and US41 (end of Dale Mabry and go a bit further). Probably a 40-45 minute drive for you, the Veterans/Sun Coast Pkwy will cut off about 10-20 minutes of that Northbound, depending where you get off. The lights on Dale are timed for Southbound traffic so you would only save about 5-10 minutes on the return trip. The old time vs. money decision. Check out www.sunpass.com to see the toll rates for various exits. SR52 would be ideal, but SR54 and Dale Mabry exits aren't bad either. IMHO, I'd take the Dale exit since you're past the major traffic lights by then.

The guy that runs Charlie's is a member of the club that runs Linebaugh (Bay City Flyers) and he'd be more than happy to set you up as a guest with him or someone else to check it out. I'm also in the club, but I've never been to Linebaugh so I'm not much use in that respect.

Let me know if you decide to check out the main field. I'm usually there Saturday or Sunday mornings before the heat sets in. We keep the gate closed, but as long as the padlock isn't engaged, you can unlatch and come on in.

I assume you made it to the Linebaugh field? I've heard good things about it, but never made it down there. On Sunday, I ran into the guy that runs the hobby shop while at the main field (I can never remember his name, he reminds me of Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy). I told him there might be a new heli guy in town. Were you in looking for Raptor parts?

I'm glad you had a good time! Hopefully I'll see you around the field some time. If you see someone with a large Graupner MC-24 radio, you've probably found me. The helis/planes may change, but the radio stays the same.

He was just setting up as I left. My kitchen pass was about to expire. I try to get there around dawn to avoid the heat. I'm going to try to get Wednesday & Thursday off (it's a little slow this week anyway) and see if I can disappear to the field in the mornings, or work on a project. There's never enough time on the weekends.

Let me know if you are heading to the main field on any particular day. I'll see if I can escape.
