I have a couple cordless tool batteries with A123 cells (technically they are labeled 18650 on the cells) and I have a question about charging them. I have a Triton Jr. charger which has a Lithium Ion setting which charges to 3.6 volts per cell. The batteries I have are 3 cell and they are labeled 10.8 volts. This is in line with the 3.6 volts per cell setting on the Triton Jr. However, I have been told to only use a charger with a A123 setting because A123 batteries are 3.3 volts per cell. If that is true, why are my batteries labled 10.8 volts?

Is there any reason why I can't use my Triton Jr. on these batteries? I don't want to destroy the batteries, but more importantly I don't want to damage my charger or cause a fire (although I thought that wasn't as big of a problem with A123 cells).

Thanks for any help. I'm sure this question has been asked before and I appreciate your patience.

What cordless tool battery are you buying that has 3 A123 batteries?

I have two batteries from a Bosch Pocket Driver. The cells are labeled 18650 (supposedly the same part number of A123's 1100 mAh cell) and they are the same shape and size of the A123 cells in the VPX. However, I can't say for sure that they are A123 cells. They are lithium ion, and are supposed to be good for a 1000 cycles, no memory, 60% more power, etc. All the same claims as the A123 cell, so I assumed they are the same (I know, assumptions are bad).

However, there is a new, confusing piece to the puzzle. I checked the voltage of the pack just to see, and it was 11.27v . I'm not sure what the deal is. Maybe I should just forget using them for R/C.

My guess is that they are Lithium Ion, max charge voltage 4.2 volts, nominal voltage 3.7 which would give you pretty much the voltage you are seeing.
