After a long time it seems like, I'm considering robostruts. I never used them on any of my previous four Warbirds, but now considering them for my new Top Flite 60 size P51D that's on the work bench. Are they drop in replacements for the stock wires? I'm assuming they also have the 'shock absorbing' action that robostruts are known for? Would I need the off center or the straight up and down ones for the P51? I would rather stick to the mechanical variety vs. air as I've had great luck with the mechanicals just as long are they're setup correctly.

Any other suggestions or comments. Thanks,,,

They are heavier than wire gear therefore more weight to pull up for your servo. The struts have a spring in them to absorb shock. I don't have robarts struts but have a pair from spring air and they work ok. My airplane was too heavy for 3/8" diameter at 10.5 lbs and i ended up using a solid wire inside the strut to strengthen it.
I would recommend 7/16 struts if your plane is over 9 lbs so you won't have to worry about them bending.
The struts come with 3/16 and 5/32 adapters so they will fit into a retract unit drilled for wire gear.
Good luck,

I put the RoboStruts on my Spring-Air retracts in my Pica Spitfire. They have been working pretty well for about 12 years now. The way they are installed is that you cut off the wire strut coming out of your retracts with about 1.5 or 2 inches showing. This wire 'stub' is inserted into an adapter inside the Robostrut and held in place by a couple of set screws. The problem I have is that the set screws get rounded off after repeated landings and finally allow the strut to twist on a hard landing which turns the wheel and causes the plane to nose-over on the runway. I have filed a flat on the wire, replaced the set screws, and finally filled the connection with JB Weld epoxy, but it still will twist with a less-than-perfect landing! I guess what I am saying is to make that connection as strong as you can, and try to land gently! I still like the struts though...

They have some brands/types of retracts now that have a large hole bored in them so that the Robostrut will fit directly into the retract mechanism. I think that would be a lot stronger than the strut-on-the-wire method. I believe Robart makes the retracts that accept the Robostruts directly, and maybe Spring-Air makes them also. That would be the best way to go, I think.

The P-51 usually uses the off-set struts, however regular straight ones will work if you're not overly concerned with the scale look.

on a mustang the offset struts are really the only way to go,if your going to go through the process of fitting any type of shock absorbing strut then at least install the correct type for the plane your building.
robart also makes robostrut ready gear that are air driven, air up/spring down,as well as full air up/down units.
if your using a retract servo make sure it can handle the extra weight of the robostrut if your gear binds it can drain the battery rather quickly, another advantage of air driven retracts.
as for gear if your building the kit then there are several choices the robart and century jet to name a couple, you need to build to fit whatever brand your chosing each requires certain fitting adjustments.
if its the new ARF then the robart are a near to perfect fit out of the box and you can use the robostruts with the gear provided.
there is a couple of threads on each version, the new ARF is covered in the warbirds section, and the kit has a great, and long thread in the kit building section well worth reading.
I have this one in the box waiting to be built as a Malcom hood C model but I have a couple of projects to finish before that comes up.
a example of each type that I have my Top Flight Spitfire with the robart robostruts, and my TF P-47 with the CJ's there both fine air operated gear and work well.
one thing that makes alot of differance is wire gear is alot more forgiving than any shock absorbing strut, struts have a limited amount of travel if you come in hard they will either break or break the LG mounts, wire will bend on hard impact and cusion the blow.

I'm building the ARF 60 size. Thanks for the comments guys. I understand now, they just slip over the existing wire after it's cut an inch and a half or so below the mechanism.

I'll be considering them.

a few of the guys that have been flying the ARF have already broken the stock LG and replaced them with the Robart mechanical units,it looks like a sweet plane.
if I didn't already have a Hangar-9 stang and a TF in the box I might have gotten one of them myself, the thread in the warbirds section goes through this plane well,if you have any questions about it that is a good place to start the guys are always ready to help.
