I have an HPI K5.9 engine installed in my Savage X SS and I wasn't happy with how it ran in combination with the HPI polished pipe. I came to the conclusion that the pipe must be too small for a 5.9cc/.36ci engine, so I borrowed a CEN GST 7.7 tuned pipe and tested it with the K5.9. All I can say is WOW! I was really happy with how it ran with the CEN pipe, so I bought one on Ebay for $11 shipped! Here's a comparison video I made using both pipes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb8jda78rac

I can't believe HPI didn't design a pipe specifically for the K5.9! It has a 29% larger displacement than the 4.6 (.28) and they just tossed the same pipe on it! The K5.9 is much easier to tune and it runs cooler with the larger CEN pipe. The CEN pipe may also work well on .32 engines, so if you can buy one cheap, give it a shot!

I thought so too! It runs better throughout the entire RPM band and it doesn't sound like it is suffocating or bogging!

I know there are some guys that like the polished Hpi pipe, but I have yet to find an engine that it works good on. I have an XL coming and plan to do some pipe swapping once it is broken in. Normally the Hpi pipe does not supply enough fuel pressure at higher rpms and the engines go lean, which might explain your temperatures. MazdaB2600 has his running pretty fair with an extension on the stinger and I think it was Go-to that shimmed the stinger on one to get the pressure up. BB

Here's a pic of it on the stock pipe hanger. It can fit tighter to the chassis with a customized pipe hanger. I think the CEN header may work with some modification, but it's pretty long so it may not. The pipe I bought on Ebay includes the header, so I will find out soon!

You might try turning the fuel nipple on your carb so that it pints between the air cleaner and the head, then running your fuel line from the tank the same way. It will not run as long upside down, but it will go a long ways towards slowing down the half tank lean issue. I started doing that about six months ago and it really seems to help with that. You have a nice stout looking truck there. I am guessing you have your antenna in fuel line routed around the chassis so you do not tear it off. I just had a runaway this week, first time with a Savage. The antenna wire snapped off about two inches from the rx. It was kind of a helpess sick feeling watching it run in a big arc out of the park, onto the street, back into the park across another street, across two yards, then climb a chainlink fence and flip over on its lid. I never was a fail safe guy, but I am seriously thinking about getting a few now. BB

yeah i wouldn't encase my antenna in feul line either for that reason, DTX sells a anttena kit with 10 anttenas with caps for $6 its really easy insurance with that and a bit of feul tubing for the wire lead that you're anntena will be fine, i tested the HPI anntena pipe i could bend it in circles, but i broke it some how, with a small bit of sanding i got a DTX one in and they NEVER break not even in 20 degree weather,

and the HPI pipe sounds like it really is choking that engine to death, the CEN sounds way better

Thanks for the tip. I might have to try routing my fuel tubing that way. Yeah my antenna is in the tubing zip tied to the roll bar. It's a 2.4ghz antenna, so it's only about 5-6 inches long. I kept snapping plastic tubes, so I settled on this set-up. It's nice to be able to keep the antenna under the body for appearance purposes.

the DTX WILL hold up to anything, and if you want cut short for appreances you can, + you get better range if your antenna is vert

My range is fine the way it is and the antenna is protected under the body. 2.4ghz radios have better range than FM or AM radios.

That's good. It never hurts to share the little tricks that we learn from our own experience. That's what forums are all about!
