I finally got my flywheel dynomometer back in operation and decided to test my new PolyRC 3S 4900 LiPo battery. Wow these things pack a rediculous about of current. Had I not tested it myself I never would have believed a battery this size could deliver 288 amps for short bursts. The attached dyno chart is equally impessive, with a peak of over 2.1 horsepower I'm starting to understand why my car is so hard to contol. Nitro is for suckers!!!

Is that like a NEU 1521? There's no way a 540 brushless motor could make that much power.

It's obviously a decent motor if it's pulling 288amp bursts out of the pack. I'd guess at a Neu or a Lehner either of which are perfectly capable of hitting 2000watt outputs (2 kilowatts or 2.9hp) from a 550 size can.

Ive seen Neu's draw 321a bursts before and its a 550 size can. Extremely low winds along with high gearing gets you their.

With such low torque, that thing won't give good results when in the rc unless it was for a road car on pavement doing down hill with the wind pushing it.

The new Neu 1509 "Supermassive" draws 230a bursts and its a standard 540 size motor.

The motor is a Lehner Basic XL 4200 and the speed controller is a BK Warrior 9918. Even though the peformance is decent, my next motor will definitely not be a Lehner.

In testing this combination on a flywheel dyno I've found it's best to gradually bring the RPM up to 5000 and then nail the throttle. The Warrior has a built-in .3 second ramp-up time delay so that further skews the low end performance results. For this power curve I'd ignore anything below about 10,000 RPM.

So 0.65 Newton-Meters of torque isn't enough for a 1/10th scale RC car? What's your recommended minimum? What does a really good motor put out?

I just ordered a Castle CMS36 4600kV motor and will run it on the dyno when it arrives. Any predictions on how it will compare to the Lehner 4200?

Wont even... Im guessing around 800w-900w meaning about 1hp.

Are the k/V ratings derived differently or are the Castle motors really that bad?

It's pretty simple, just a flywheel with an optical pickup that sends the revolution pulses to a cheap ($50) DATAQ DI-148U data logging unit. After a "pull" on the dyno I calculate torque and power in a spreadsheet using the moment of inertia for the flywheel (~.000049 Kg-M^2) and an air resistance drag factor which I derived from some coast-down tests.

I feel it's reasonably accurate for determining outright power, but I use it mainly to compare differences between batteries and motors, and to help select gear ratios for top speed runs.

KV really has very little to do with overall performance, it's just a figure meaning what the motor will attempt to spin per volt whilst unloaded. Like a real engine, it could be cranking 1500hp, but put it in a draggy AWD vehicle and that could drop to 1200 at the wheels. Use the motor in an RC and you'll find there are far more important factors in performance, such as gearing, weight, architecture of the motor, heat dissipation etc.

There is a massive quality jump between the Lehner and CMS36 motor, the Castle will run hotter, be less efficient and generally be less powerful than the Lehner, regardless of it's inflated KV rating.

For $85 I figured it would less efficient and have a little less power than my Lehner, but with a 3S Lipo I imagine it will push my RC10 to 55+ mph with the right gearing and tires.
