Hey, on average, how many gallons of fuel can an engine take before it needs to be replaced / rebuilt? Assuming it was broken in correctly... Does it differ between stock and aftermarket engines? Thanks

I have heard that Piccos are one of the longer lived engines and the Axial 32 is one of the shorter lived engines. I think it has more to do with the owner or user than the engine manufacturer. I have an Axial 32 with lots of fuel through it and all I have replaced is a front bearing. I also have Piccos with lots of fuel through them and they are still running great. By lots, I mean more than three gallons. I doubt the average RC owner ever gets three gallons through any engine before they sell or shelve it. You hear stories of ten or twelve gallons, but I do not keep good enough records to know. I have 29 cars and trucks now with the 30th on the way. I am lucky if I can remember what is wrong with them, much less how much fuel has been through each one. I know this 32 has as much run time as anything I own, it started in my first Savage and I just keep running it.... I think clean air, clean fuel, sealing the engine and a good tune are the factors to long engine life. BB

With good maintenance and not too harsh running, expect 8-10 gallons, thats the norm.

So I should expect 4-5 gallons? I maintain them, but run them as hard as I can.

Well I guess I worded it a bit wrong there. There are too many factors that determine the life of engines, but racing them/ doing other strenuous activites will shorten their lifespan. I'm sure that "our" definition of hard running doesnt match up to how much strees is put on these engines while racing. Driving up and down sand dunes and jumping is nothing compared to running 25 laps on a dirt track while on the throttle 90% of the time...

ok cool, thanks for the info. How are the LRP .28 engines? do they last a while? The truck I just bought has one in it and the stock 4.6 both with about 2 gallons each run through them.

LRP .28 is regarded as an extremely user friendly engine with huge amounts of power. The F4.6 is not too far behind in both departments either but nevertheless, it is an RTR engine. Tom.

The biggest thing is to put the piston at bottom dead center after EVERY run. If you do this it will last wayyy longer than normal. I have an old OS 12 CZ thats almost 10yrs old with over 12gallons adn still has good pinch. Running temps between 250-265 and BDC after every run.

yeah, I saw something about the bottom of teh stroke thing in a video once... I'l definately do that. What about after run oil? is it necessary? I know some people run it and some dont. Does it make much difference?

I'm not sure to be honest, but I do it anyway nowadays. I ran my old TRX 2.5 for 8 and 1/2 gallons without ARO and it still runs.

Keep your temps up to at least 200 when you are running it. That will help prolong the life of the piston and sleeve wear and tear. I use a hair dryer during the break in to preheat the head. In the winter I preheat the head and wrap the head to keep the temps up to at least 200. I usually get about 9 to 10 gallons out of my engines. My axial got about 10 gallons before it lost alot of power and was hard to start. I would say if you are careful then you can expect around 10 on a good quality motor. But if you run it hard and race it, then you will be lucky to get 10.

Air filter, air filter, air filter. Keep your air filter clean and oiled. Get a 2 stage filter. Oil the inner filter and keep the outer dry. With a 2 stage you dont have to clean the inner as much. Just clean the outer/pre filter. I use sidewinder fuels so no need for ARO with those fuels. I have been using them for years with great luck. My trucks sit all winter and start right up in the spring. Just do these simple things adn there is no reason why you cant get 8-10 gallons on any motor well except for the Traxxas 3.3
