Hey guys my new evo 46 (week old) is dying at 1/2+ throttle, It ran great till yesterday and I thought it was my fuel, but that was not it. I have replaced the fuel lines and reset all the needles to no avail. Its at the LHS and they seemed to be stumped. any ideas?

I have 4oz tank, inline with the carb and less than 6 inches of fuel line total including the 1.5 inch lead from the highspeed needle to the carb.

It runs great at anything less then 1/2 throttle though so they doubt its a internal issue but its not ruled out.

Thanks

How does the engine sound as you are approaching 1/2 throttle slowly and rapidly? Any gurgles or does it just die instantly?

What glow plug are you using? Have you tried something hot like an A3?

Did you replace the vent line from the muffler too?

Did you replace the line from the remote needle valve to the carb?

Are you absolutely sure your low speed is set rich enough?

It's not getting enough fuel to support an open throttle either due to clogged intenally (dirt, debri in the needle valve area) or a hole/slit in the line. It doesn't take much of a slit to cause issues... mine was almost not able to be seen until i stretched the tubing. Since your replaced them all i doubt it's the fuel line. Be sure your line is not constricted coming through the neck of the tank and that the bends in brass are not kinked. (A tubing bender for small brass is pricelss) I have the evo 46 and it's a real nice motor and very quiet wth the stock muffler. Ttake it apart and rinse with some glo fuel and reassemble.. Since it's new and has been happening since day one, there may be somtihng on the needle valve etc.. a small bur or hardened contaminant causing issue.

I've got the same problem with my evo 46. I've had 15 flights on it now and it does not like high throttle under a bind on the runway or it the air. I've had it on the test stand and it cleans out well and works like it suppose to...on the stand. When I taxi out, get it cleaned out so it won't load up then give it half throttle and advance to full throttle...it shuts down. When launched with half throttle, it gets in the air and then on to full to help clean it out in the air, it bogs, gurggles and wants to shut down but back at half throttle it does better but has an occational sputter on flyby. It runs at full throttle great on the test stand but not in the air.

No holes in the tank or lines...I've had it under pressure and checked for leaks submerged in a bucket for air bubbles even when I squeeze the tank, no leaks. I've looked for original needle settings but seem not to locate them....Anyone have any idea what factory settings are on this engine Evo .46?

These symptoms point to using a glow plug that is too cold. The gurgling and clearing out will probably go away with an OS A3 plug. And, you should see an increase in power too. The Evo .455 PTS engine does the same thing until you put in a hotter plug.

Flushing out debris can be simple if you pump fuel backwards into the remote needle valve. Add a short piece of fuel tubing to the intake side of the RNV for the fuel to drain. I use a coffee filter so that I can trap whatever crude gets flushed out.

These are very powerful engines with A3 plugs. The hotter plug really makes the engine perform like you've never seen it run. 4 stroke plugs are okay, but don't let the engine perform like the A3.

Thanks alot. I've had the original plug in it for the 15 flights(15 min each) and I could tell that this engine would scream. The plane has had 2 major crashes and 1 hard landing with it but just burnt out the plug and I put another Evo plug in it(got'em free at a fly-in) but I've got some A3's in my box and I'm going to try them. The plane has good speed at half throttle...can't wait to see at full.

By the way...the plane is the Hanger 9 P51 PTS and I'm not giving up on it. I like the design and everyone at the club has doubts in it but I want to prove them wrong. Another member had the same plane and crashed it after 2 or 3 flights. I don't know if he's rebuit it yet or moved on but I'm giving it a chance.

And again, thanks for all the info....that's what I've found out about the RC Community....everyone likes to help each other out to promote our hobby!!!

BLW.. good advice onthe plug.. I had a what I consider very knowledgable person take a look at another engine I had and the plug was the culprit.... we removed it and could see the winding was off center. This was the root of the problem. He t hought it could have gotten pushed off center maybe by the engine being flooded and attempted to be started before realizing .. which did happen.
