I have a Zagi 400X with the stock motor and battery pack and I am using the carbon prop. How can I make it a little faster and a little more powerful without spending a lot of money? I love it, but it just needs a little more (for not much $$$). Thanks.

I have seen people use other speed 400 motors, which = $$$ I have also seen people use hacker brushless motors which = bigger $$$.

One thing that I found on mine is that I can do aerobatics that no one else seems to be able to do, it flies very well inverted , it will do split s's , it will loop to the OUTSIDE , it rolls pretty well for a zagi.... of course all of these things work best on a full pack and get increasingly difficult to complete all the way to impossible as the pack is used up.

What upgrade did I perform to get it to do this? I put the elevons on backwards......put the wide part on the inside and the narrow part on the outside..... I and others at my club all think it even looks better and it definetely flies better.....Give it a try!

by the way, just in case you may be interested I carry NEW 1700mah zagi packs (the very same sanyo cells WITH deans connectors) for $35.

While not the best motor out there, I am flying my 400X with a Wattage Cobalt motor and the carbon prop. The motor is about $35.00, which is not too bad, and gives the Zagi a lot more zip than the stock motor, and will work fine with the stock speed controller to boot. It does require the carbon prop, which you have, so it would be an easy, and pretty cheap upgrade. It is a bit longer than the stock motor, so you can either cut back the tray you have, or get one of the "long" trays from Trick R/C for about $5.00 which will fit perfectly.

If you are running the stock 8 cell 1700 pack and have the carbon prop on in the right direction you are doing the best you can do with this ship.
After building a hundred or so for folks, here are a few things for you to consider.

Replace the motor and break in the new one properly. The stock Zagi motor is only about $8 and if you break it in properly will give you hours of good flights. New = faster. These things come out of the factory in batches. The last 100 I had were OK but not so hot, but I just got in 100 more that are turning up almost 13,000 RPMS a big difference. Then I have a new reverse timed speed 400 that will be in stock in about a week for only $3-$4 more it will be really hot.

The next thing is to discharge the battery every 10 flights or so. and only charge it at a max of 2 amps. This will give to the best charge and faster flights. Make sure to let it cool down all the way in between flights. I would also consider the 1400 8 cell packs (I have them at $33.00) These cells have less resistance and are faster the first 3-4 min of the flight. They are also lighter weight and you only loose about 10% of the flight time.

Weight is a factor, you did not mention how much your ship weighs but lighter is faster. Go easy on the strapping tape and only use 3/4 inch tape. 3m#77 is also real heavy. When you spray it if you can see it it is going on to heavy. Easy on the Epoxy.

All the while you are doing these things save your $ for an Astro Flight brushless 020. This will fly in the stock tray and will allow you to fly with the stock 1700 pack at almost 75MPH. Yes they are pricey but once you go brushless you will not go back and will wonder what you have been doing with that slow speed 400.

The next plane you get you might consider the Windrider Ele Bee. It is all molded EPP with the servo bays molded in. No 3m#77 needed and no epoxy! It has a thinner airfoil and is a lot faster but does not have a problem slowing down as the tip cord is a little wider.

I hope this helps you some?
Good Winds

though its expensive, put a hacker in it. Call up Hacker brushless motors and they'll set you up.

I agree. Don't waste your time with Magnetic Mayhems, Cobalt, Carbon Props or HR batteries, they will just leave you wanting for a little bit more. Save up for the brushless (although I prefer Mega).

There is one really inexpensive thing you can do to help, of course weight being the first place to gain the extra speed. Re-time you speed 400 motor. These motors are being spun backwards and lose some of the timing efficiency that they are timed with. You can gain as much as 15% more RPM back by retiming, the farther you time them though the shorter the life of the motor.

Just a free way to get another 10-15% RPM which = speed.

Correct Timing is correct and will help! A motor timed at zero will run in either direction but will not run efficiently at top speed in either direction. Timing it properlywill improve top-end performance, but in only one direction. Typically, all Speed-400 motors are timed at zero to go either direction.

I have the newest speed 400 motors now in stock that are built for Pusher operations.

The new ones I have are custom designed, dedicated reverse rotation 6-volt motors. The can looks the same but inside there are three important new features. The Pusher is factory timed at optimum top-end performance for direct drive reverse rotation. Like our other spped 400 motors, the new Pusher is balanced. The Pusher winding wire gauge was changed to increase torque at top-end.

The balance, timing and new formula winding all contribute to the ten percent plus increase in speed and greater torque for better performance. Radar tests clocked the Pusher on a Zagi X at 52 mph, 7 mph faster than stock. That’s the same speed as most $75.00 cobalt motors. The penalty for all the increased performance is only about 2.5 amps more than stock but way below the hungry 17 amp cobalt motors.

I would use this motor with the carbon props...and then go get an Astro 020, and some new sunglasses ;-)

Vanman,
I did the elevon flip over, like you suggested to jbutkovic, and it really did improve handling. In fact, it improved the handling so much that it was unflyable! Every time I tried to turn, it would do 3 a barrel roll! After putting it through a tree and into the blackberry bushes, i trimmed down the elevons. After a lot of trimming and testing, I finally got it to where it flies very responsively, but not squirrely. It flies faster, glides MUCH better, and is more aerobatic, except for one maneuver. Every time I try to do a loop, it starts to loop, and then does a barrel roll throughout the loop! It looks awsome, but I would like to be able to do normal loops, too. So what I've decided to do is make another pair of elevons that are the same shape as the stock ones, and are put on the same way as the stock ones. Then I can just switch between the two.
That was good advice, I just recommend that if you do this, either put on all of the exponential you can, if you have it (which I don't), or trim the widest part of the elevons.

Web,

You know, here is something funny....another guy at my club tried it the way I have mine setup and he found his to be uncontrollable as well. He monkeyed with it until he atlast changed it back to the way it was. I never did get to see where he had his throws or where he was measuring them.

Now for the kicker, I re-built mine the other day and when I put it back together I found that it was much more squirrley than it was prior to the rebuild, not unflyable but much more touchy. I had to back off the throws just a tad as well........strange.

I think I have the explanation. When I set the throws for 3/8" up and down, I measure them at the tip of the widest part with a square, not a deflection meter. I just built my sons Zagi tonight and will do the maiden tomorrow, will post my results as I set his up exactly as I set mine up.

As for the loops, I have no problem doing loops (inside and outside), rolls, and inverted flight. I really love it setup this way!

Good Luck!

Use a Kontronics FUN400 Brushless and a 10 cell 1300SCR Nicad and turn it loose. This setup will amaze you and everyone else at the fly field. It is scary fast .... no matter which direction or position it's flying. Loops/inverted/inverted loops/barrel rolls.
