Hi guys,

just a quick question which I think I already know the answer to but i thought I would ask to confirm it. Would it be possible to fit a CRRC pro 26cc gas engine into a 4* 60. I'm looking at purchasing a Saito 82 four stroke but with the price of Nitro in the UK I thought I'd give it a go. The Gasser is £20 cheaper, thats $40 to you yanks, and would go a lot longer on a tank. With Nitro ranging from $30 to $60 dollars a gallon I'd rather go gas at $10 a gallon. It's just the size and weight that I think will be a big no no. I would have gone with a 4* 120 but I think the 60's are easier to build as they are all now laser cut, I might be wrong on that, but also the transporting of it and this being my first plane...!

I've already ordered the 60 so if it won't fit then it's a case of though.

Cheers guys

I'm not familiar with that particular gas engine but I would imagine it will be too heavy and bulky for the plane. There would be all sorts of balkancing issues and the added weight may spoil the great flight characteristics of the plane.

I'd just stick with an inexpensive .60 class 2-stroke or maybe go with a .75 for some added power. A .91 4-stroke would also work well.

Compare the weight of the engine and ignition to a Magnum 91 four stroke. Most 4*60's build out tail heavy and need weight up front. My first, using stock motor mounts required 5 oz of weight in the form oa 5/8" sq key stock drilled in the pattern of the motor mount to firewall screw pattern. This not only added 5 oz at the firewall, but stuck the nose out 5/8" One of the guys built one with a Saito and he needed something like 12 oz to get it balanced out.

One other guy bashed his 4*60, new design on the empannage and clipped wings with round tips. He used an o.s. 60 converted to diesel. His was nose heavy, so he installed the servos just forward of the empannage for balance. He also used a full length exhaust pipe to keep his model clean. It is a great flyer.

Don

PS. I just looked that engine up. I expect you are going to run into prop isses also. It minimum recomend size is a 16" and at that size, you stand a chance of a prop strike on other than a greaser landing. Also, the weight is about 2 1/2 times the weight of at Mag 91. Don't think it will work well for you.

I'm kind of with Chuck on this one but only because it's just very easy to install A glow engine in this plane. I have one on the bench right now with A Saito 1.00 going up front.
I do just happen to have A small RC Showcase 1.40 22cc gas engine that would slide right into this little plane.
OK, slide may not quite be correct but I could get it in there and working. The rear mounted carb is sometimes A little problem. The air frame could use some added strength in places too.
However this combo would be A good choice for A gasser.
Maybe??

Thanks for the replies, they were pretty much what I was expecting. You are right with the weight being too much and would probably spoil the flight characteristics I have heard so much about. Just a shame as it would save quite a bit on fuel.

I was thinking of a Saito 82 as they look so nice and sound really good. Will this also cause me problems due to the lightness of this engine, will I need weight in the tail? I can get a SC / Magnum 91 for around £40 ($80) less, would this be a better choice? Not really heard much of SC here in the UK apart from them being cheap, I beleive they are made by the same people who make Magnum which seem quite popular on here. Or perhaps a OS 72 surpass II for around the same as the Saito?

Sorry for the engine questions, but I don't see a specific engine forum on here unless I am going mad. I suppose I can get away with it since it is related to the 4*.

Thanks for any help

How about a Zenoah 20 cc gas engine. Might be able to make that fit.

Google Zenoah and then go to their website and click on Zenoah 20. I don't think I am allowed to put a direct link because it is an online store.

Also here is the engine forums
