Hi- I recently crashed my nexstar at our airfield. It was my float plane( which was giving me difficulty in ROWing). I was just reviewing the Avistar as a possible replacement as my float plane. Any comments or experience as to which will make a better float plane? I was using a 46 fxi and was going to put on my 55ax- I have great planes fiberglass floats-38" -any input would be greatly appreciated

the avistar would be great on floats...my buddy has one on wheels and it flies awesome....and not that bad at aerobatics either...i had a superstar 40 on v mar floats last year and it flew great until the wings folded and ended my expierience on floats for a while. if your not into the aerobatics go look at a superstar 40. it would prob be a great choice. takes off very quickly. as for aerobatics it wasnt too shabby.. just not like a symetrical airfoiled plane.

The Nexstar is a horrible flying airplane, for any level pilot it is just not a good stable airplane. Looks good though.... The Avistar is a much better flying plane. The Tower Trainer 40 MkII is the best one of the trainers Tower sells/ Hobbico makes. It is a great everyday flot plane. The Sig LT40 is also a good choice.

Fairplane, I have an Avistar on floats (Hanger nine arf floats) and it flies AWESOME!!! It has a OS 46fx and has more than enough power to get it right out of the water. The only concern I may have for you is your float choice. I have the GP arf floats also I'm putting them on an uproar 60, The GP floats are longer than the H9 and I think the H9 may be alittle big for the avistar (but it flies AWESOME!!!) If I were you I'd get the H9 floats and save the GP for a little bigger plane. If you want I can send pics. Do a search from the main page "Dynaflight SD sea commander fuji" and check out my Decathlon. Let me know what you think? I just got the fuji for her.

I like the 3D planes, But after flying the avistar, I love float flying!! You can fly it off the snow (I don't use a water rudder) it's a trainer but also semi aerobatic so I can hook my buddy box up and let my friends (who don't fly) give it a whirl. If I crashed it today I would buy another one tommorow. Hope this helps. Thanks Kevin

I have an avistar that I was thinking of adding floats to...too... Can these floats be easily removed and replaced with landing gear? Also, how about ski's for winter flying. My instructor always jokes about flying in the winter. Regarding the Avistar....STABLE but a KICK to fly. Very forgiving, but very responsive.

Hello Malthepal- the floats are very easy to switch out to wheels-takes about 5 min. You can check out this link to set it up for a trike-very easy to do . I am thinking i might go with the avistar -I haven't heard any bad about it. Thanks everyone for your input http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=560808&highlight=floats+on+nexstar

I have a Nexstar on floats - bought it last year specifically for use as a float plane. Had a small hobby shop up here install a set of his foam floats and it flys really great. I use a OS 52 FS and a 12x5 prop. Several mods were required to make into a great flying float plane. First, I took out half of the dihedral by putting a bend into the wing joiner and added a vertral fin. This plane with floats weighs nearly nine lbs fueled.

I configured the plane to use flaps also. This plane does wonderful splash n' gos!! I don't use it for aerobatics.

My Avistar is a terrific performer with an OS 46LA on foam / balsa covered floats. I left the main gear and nose gear installed and ran the water rudder push rod off of the nose steering arm. The 5/32" piano wire front gear is bent to match the mains and is screwed to the bottom of the ply firewall with 4 nylon brackets. Make sure the step is at the cg and the wing has some positive incidence compared to the top of the floats. Changing back to wheels takes me a couple of minutes.
