Hi Mike,

I have a TM models Surpass F3A 90 size plane with a YS110-s running on 30% nitro and 20% coolpower spinning a APC 15x10 prop.

The plane flies great and the motor is superb, but I am not happy with the engine mounting.
I have only flown the plane twice and have found that I run out of fuel and end up deadstick landing [not a problem she glides for ever ]

The problem is that when it goes dead it must stop so abruptly that the engine moves dramaticaly and has busted the ply webbing that supports the ply engine mounting arrangement.
It has also bent my extension on the high speed needle adjustment and bites into the fibreglass cowl.
The engine is mounted to the ply framework by a soft mount similar to the Dave Brown style mount.

I was thinking about removing all the ply engine mount, and after beefing up the firewall, retro fit a HYDE soft mount.

Are these any good and will it help in my situation or should I hard mount it to a conventional mount as some other modellers have mentioned.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks and Kind regards..

A GOOD soft mount is a great way to go. It quites the model and is much easier on the airframe and wear of servos, linkages, etc. The Hyde mount is one of the best around. That being said, it allows a lot of movement which is normally a good thing. When you run the engine out of fuel, it leans out when it quits, so it is a very hard, abrupt stop and will deflect a lot in the mount. Best advice I can give is to use a timer and dont run it dry in the air. If you want more air time, put in a bigger tank.

Was interested in purchasing one of these models, however cant find little or anything about there performance etc.
Even photos are few and far between.

How has it been for you, interested in you problem with the soft mount, how did you solve it?.
Just about to start on an OTOP with the same sort of engine setup with a YS110
Any info would be appreciated

Cheers Greg

Hi,
I ended up cutting off the entire timber structure that the engine mounts too. As I said i was running soft mount bars originally and they thrashed around badly.
After much discussion and head scratching I decided to use a dubro alloy mount with isolation grommets.
This works great and doesnt send anymore vibrations through the airframe than the soft mounts did.
Oh and bye the way they are much cheaper.
I see you are using a much more expensive airframe than mine.
If you do decide to go with the Hyde Mount you will have to use a nose ring as well. This will support your engine and stop it from thrashing around.
Best of luck..
