Jamie, a fellow member of our club had is beautiful Porter Pilatus out at our recent All Electric Fly-In. This airplane was scratch built using hand-drawn plans by Jamie himself.
On the second flight of the day, he had a mid-air just after take-off with a small Extra on a landing approach. Follow the link for a series of hi-res stills from the actual video footage.

My only question would be if he just took off, why is he going the opposite direction of another airplane on final? It's a shame because that Porter was a nice looking plane.

Well that is a good question. The answer is that we have two runways N-S and E-W

The smaller airplane was on final approach, landing on the N Runway from the S and the bigger airplane was taking off on the E Runway. They both had a quartering headwind, since the wind was blowing from the N-E direction. So I guess you could say both runways were active at the time.

What a shame... Did the CD notify pilots that there would be 2 active runways? Was there any coordination between flight lines? I'm just curious. I like to get to the root of problems like this. Makes it easier to keep em from happening to me.

I was there, all I saw were the two planes hitting the ground. There were alot of crashes that day, I lost 1 plane and damaged my helicopter.

I loved that Porter though, I wish it didn't happen.
