Hi All,

I have a question about the muffler. I have a brand new OS Max .91. Should I use some kind of teflon tape or silicone sealent or something to that effect on the threaded ends of the pipe where it connects to the engine and the muffler?

Ed

.....yes, use teflon tape at the engine....and check the fitting to make
sure it is snug before every flight, and your threads will thank you....

....so will your wallet.

I've had very good luck with using the high temp (Black) silicon sealant. Apply a very thin layer on the Male threads and screw in to a stop then back off for alignment, but not more than one turn. The Tighten the nut, really tight. Same on the muffler to pipe. I've got a Magnum 91 that has survived two 4*60's and the first setting of the muffler is still intact, never losening up or moving.

I've seen a few of the O.S 91 surpass engines have the heads strip out, but I expect the pilot would have had the same trouble with my Magnum. It looked as if he only screwed the pipe into the head about three or four truns and then snugged the nut down, a little. It losend up and wore the thread and when he went to retighten the nut, the threads couldn't hold up as they were worn. He found he coud screw in another three turns and this time he really tightned it down, but that didn't hold but for one or two flight and the muffler was rattling acround in the cowling again.

If you set it up the first time correctly by getting a full thread into the head, and then really tighten it, you will not have any problems. Cut corners and it will bite you and as Flyboy Dave said your wallet also.

Thanks Guys I appreciate the advice. I really like the fact that you can post a question here and with in a few hours or so it will be answered. Its great to be able to get a response so fast. Great source when where I am there is limited hobby shops and to wait 2-3 weeks to the next club meeting to ask the guys is a bit to long to wait when your trying to finish building something.

Thanks Again

Ed
