what kinda parts should i stock up on for my first on-road race. im running a brand new gt-40/sportline, so i dont have any spares. i know i need the basics like a second reciever pack and about 2 sets of tires, plus the 4 that are on the car but what else. im not sure what im gona crash into, so its kinda hard to pick out the right parts. also, im not looking for any up-grades just yet. simply stock fg parts. but i just dont know what the basics are to keep as spares.. my problem is that after i buy my tires i only have bout $100 left.
so my basic questions are
-what spur and pinions should i have?
-how many tires do i need?
-what are key suspension parts that are known to break?
-should i buy diffrent tire compounds for the front and rear?
-or anything else that i may need or not need..

If you think you are going to crash, then maybe get some stuff that holds the front bumper on, or a spare bumper. IMO I would just go out, race like mad, and see what you break, then buy accordingly, and so on, and so on.

I would definately go with the second battery pack, I am not sure about the spare tyres, maybe get some second hand ones off ebay to practice on, I often see them on there as I have beebn tempted to get a set of slicks for my MB PRO.

That would be my advice.

Good luck with your race.

It's really the only way. The trouble with 5th scale is the finality of heavy impacts.

Jason, PAPE is right, in order to be 100% safe you need a whole other car because anything can happen. With that said, you can most definitely get by with minimal spares. The receiver pack you have should be fine for a few hours of running. You will have plenty of time for recharging beween practice sessions and qualifying sessions. A set of front suspension arms, extra tires and an aluminum pinion gear. Eveyone is going to have a different opinion on which tires work best, and they all can be right. Some tire compounds work better for certain driving styles. So if you take 4 drivers with different styles, a differrent compound might work best for each of them. My point is, use what you have. If you have to order an extra set, get the softest you can. Better to have more grip than not enough. Pinion and Spur, 22 or 23 tooth aluminum pinion with 40, 41 or 42 tooth plastic spur. The 22-42 combo will give you unbelieveable torque coming out of the turns, but at the expense of top speed. 23-41 or 23-40 will still give you decent punch on corner exit but with a little more top-end.

2 racers that made the last trip ran Smartech cars which are Sportline clones. They went home without having a single broken part. The Sportline cars can take quite a bit of abuse. And don't worry, if you happen to break a part you don't have, I'd be happy to help you out. I've got a pretty large assortment of spares.

You're gonna be fine. Jim and the fellas at FG Supply/VS Modelsport always do more than they should to help us out. Jim actually took parts off his PERSONAL car and sent them to me before the last race because I had some spring and gas tank issues. It doesn't get any better than that! Just listen to what they have to say, write it down if you have to. They know what they're talking about. Talk to you soon. Brian.

No matter what car you have, if you crash and break a part there will be someone in the pits with a part that will do the job lurking at the bottom of their spares box. With racing the most important thing to so is watch and learn, ask questions, watch and learn some more and ask more questions. If you don't ask you don't get so if you see somebody that has a similar car thats going well, ask his/her advice on set ups for your style of driving. The most important things about racing are:-

1, Enjoy yourself.
2, If they're that much better and faster than you - don't go off line just let them go round you.
3, Drive your car like you've stolen it.
4, Ask for help.
5, Enjoy yourself.

Mike
