Hey guys,
I recently bought a Blade CP Pro as my first helicopter. Yesterday I hovered out my 8th battery pack landing only once (a fly wouldn't leave my nose alone lol).

Today I charge both of my stock battery packs and head out to fly. I try to get her into a hover, but have to continue increasing the throttle to maintain flight, by the time I know it the chopper has decreased altitude and I'm barely a foot above the ground at full throttle and 3/4 max. trim. I assumed it was the battery, so I let the helicopter cool down before popping in the second battery pack. Second battery pack in and same problem.

From my limited knowledge, I'm assuming the tail motor is about to die causing excess amp draw. Is there any sure fire way to know if the tail motor is indeed dying?

If you need that much throttle it sounds like the main motor is going out not the tail motor. Was the helicopter new or used. When the tail motor is going out it won't be able to hold the tail in one spot as well. I have only gone through one main motor and 6-7 tail motors. Is anything binding? Is your gear mesh too tight? Is this happening right away or 6-7 minutes into the flight?

Nick

Thanks for the reply.

The helicopter was bought brand new a couple weeks ago. I have not touched the gear mesh from the factory settings, but when I took a look at it last night the main blades DID NOT spin freely by hand if spun counter-clockwise but spinning it clockwise seemed fine. As it turns out I checked the mesh of the main pinion and gear last night and the paper got stuck because the motor refused to spin with the paper in place; after wiggling the pinion a couple times (the shaft that goes through the motor and ultimately, the pinion seems to have some side to side play in it) the main rotor spun smoothly in both directions.

Nothing seems to be binding now. The gear mesh does not seem too tight, although I've only ever dealt with R/C nitro touring car gear mesh. This is happening right away.

Your welcome. Did you get to fly it again and see if that fixed the problem? I just looked at my pinion and shaft and there is no play in it. Did the motor and battery feel really hot after a flight? If so they are working too hard and the gear mesh could be the problem. I don't know how you adjust the gear mesh on a nitro, but I always unscrew the motor mounts a little and move the motor back and forth until the mesh is correct.

Setting gear mesh on a nitro is pretty much the same as you described.

The motor seems to get hot enough that you can touch for about 5 seconds (I can get an official temperature reading if needed), the battery just gets warm. I'll take it out for a flight in a little while. I did take some pictures of the gear mesh though. As of right now, I have not adjusted the mesh.

Pictures are worth a thounsand words. The pinion is too far from the main gear. On mine when I hold the pinion I can only rotate the main gear a degree or two.

Well, I just flew it and it hovered for about 10 second and lost altitude...same problem. I have adjusted the gear mesh and there seems to quite a bit of play where the shaft exits the motor casing along with some carbon around the same area. I'm thinking the main motor is messed up.

Thank you for all your help. I'm off to the hobby shop!

Hope every thing works out for you and have trouble free flights.

Ah no biggie. That motor sucks anyway. Go for a Slo-Max 300. Much better quality and power. You'll wonder why you didn't get one before. They are on par with the price of a replacment CPP motor. I got mine for $10.99 from the horizon site.

Well, one more pic for final confirmation of the problem...I didn't think the main motor would go this soon.

Hey renisiskiller,

Wow, yeah, I would say it is shot!

The pinion to main gear backlash must have been way to tight (maybe from the factory?) to do that.

Very unusual to see that happen on one of these. I have a motor with at least 60 flights that doesn't look anywhere near that bad!

Well, at least you are sure about what it is now!

Good luck with it...

Glenn

Well, it turned out the main motor was indeed on its last leg. I switched it out last night and hovered my 9th and 10th battery packs today. I'm also happy to say I kept a steady hover for the entirety of pack number 10, maybe after the next pack I'll remove the training gear.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Renisis,

Glad to hear it! If you are hovering full packs, you are getting close!

Just be careful, the training gear help stablize the heli quite a bit, because of the weight down at a low center of gravity....it's a whole new ball game when you take the gear off!

I wish you the best of luck, and just be patient with it, sounds like you are making great progress!

Can you use this motor with the blade cp? The one that has the original 4n1?
Thanks!
