I have an Enya SS40BB that recently has started slowing at full throttle, but only temporarily (like 3-5 seconds).

I am running Omega 5% fuel, with 4oz of additional castor oil per US gallon. Normally the engine is solid, but yesterday I was having some trouble with it. I had just put in an OS A3 plug (I think that it was an OS 8 previously). As the engine warmed up it seemed to have a much better response and didn't seem to have the same problem.

If it had just been started, it would slow and eventually quit at the idle. It had been running fine the day before and I am wondering if I should switch to Enya 3 glow plugs, as I am running low nitro fuel.

All in all the engine seems to have tons of power and pulls the plane around easily. (sig kadet Mark II)

One of the club members noted that there wasn't a visible exhaust with the motor, even though I was purposely trying to run it a bit rich, as it was hot after the first flight of the day.

Ideas?

Thanks

I believe it had a little lean spell.

If it is the older one with the cast iron piston - you may not have enough oil.

your fuel ratio should be 20% oil, this omega fuel sounds like it has 5% nitro which is no concern but what is the actual oil ratio ? you shouldn,t have any problems with the o.s. plugs with this enya. just make sure you have a good oil mixture content and keep the engine abit on the rich side as usual.

Freeair,

the fuel is 18% castor/synthetic blend, 5% nitro. I add 4 oz per us gallon of castor oil to bring it up to 20% or so. the engine had been running fine the day before, so I find it a bit odd that all of a sudden that it starts running a bit off. I had been increasing the richness as I had noticed that it was too hot when I had flown it before.

Anything that I should check?

thanks
CutterJohn

Did you change the prop, too? The hotter plug (and a different prop) can require a new needle valve setting.

Richen up the needle and have someone hold the plane nose up. Quickly pinch the fuel line. The rpms should jump up for a second or two. Lean the needle a couple of clicks at a time, pinching the tubing after each adjustment until the rpms don't increase. Richen it two clicks and fly the plane. This will be a safe, rich setting at level flight, but it should not lean out too much in a climb. You don't need peak rpm with your Kadet.

What I ended up doing was to try and remove a couple of potential problems, such as a slightly crimped brass fuel line, (by cutting off and replacing with new tubing), isolating the tank better with foam. It was running similarly for a bit. I even swapped the motor from a plain bushing version of the motor to the ball bearing version of the same motor (SS40 and SS40BB).

The net result was that two flights later, the clunk in the tank fell off, causing a deadstick with the tank half-full. That was easy to identify (easier than finding a hole in the existing tubing) and fix.

Haven't had the same problem since.

Also, I've swapped back the plain version for the ball bearing version and it sings like it should! Lots of power and no let up!

Thanks for the input and advice from everyone.
