I have a 25cc motor off of a Featherlite Weedeater. It has very low hours on it, and very high compression. I took it apart completely to inspect everything and it all looks good. It also has a strong spark, and is getting fuel on the spark plug.

Problem - the damn thing won't start! I am really pulling my hair out trying to understand what it could be. I even hooked it up to my electric drill for a starter - I get a puff of smoke every once in a while, but that's it. Never more than a puff.

Before I load this thing with .44 caliber holes, does anybody have any idea what could be wrong?

you said it. you pulled it completly apart. did you replace all gaskets with new ones ? does this engine have a Walbro type carby ? hope you didn,t pull this apart. what you should do is fit new gaskets to all areas, make sure the coil is set at the correct distance from the flywheel, fit a new resistor spark plug then set the high carby needle to 2 turns out and the low at 1 1/2 turns out. remember 2 strokes do not like air leaks.

Yes, flywheel key, check it. One other thing, it requires a correct mixture to start not just "some" gas on the plug so if the carb is not metering correctly it won't run. I'd check the timing first though. (Flywheel key)

Just a thought, take a shot of starting fliud, not a lot just a little bit in the carb. If it will not fire on this, using your starter, recheck your flywheel key, spark distance and coils distance gaps. If it fires but will not stay running then I'd check your lines from the fuel tank, one is the draw line the other is a vacum line. Make sure the draw line is not kinked or plugged and connected to the right tube. Increase your low end set screw to 1 1/2 to 2 turns increasing 1/8 turn at a time. If nothing still.
Then I'd look at your seals and gaskets. Take in down and reassemble using Yamabond between the parts and gasket. Also check your pulse line hole in your carb and carb base to see it was aligined correctly or pluged. Sometimes the gasket will be off just a little and it will plug up enogh not to get enough draw. Hope this will give you some help. If after ALL THIS, take it down and strat all over again, you overlooked something. Weres my gun.

How about a lawnmower repair shop as the court of last resort?

I am not familiar with this particular engine, but some engines have a transfer port hole in the piston skirt. If you instal the piston backwards it will not run. Just a thought.

Sounds like the key.
but if it was sheared and the flywheel was out of position, it would still spark when it was spun over.
And even then, wouldn't it at least pop and try to run?
I mean he said he had fuel and a good spark.
Maybe just sparking at the wrong time.

Check the front seal for tears or holes or any damage. Also check that the rear gasket is ok if this engine uses it.I converted a 25cc poulan off of a featherlite and i could start it on the 2nd or 3rd flip evrytime by hand. Also the keyway like others have said.Check for a crack in the spark plug by turning over in a dark room.

Read the replies to your question and got some good advice for a similar problem- but I must ask - Why use a 44 ? A Winchester 30.06 180 grain Silvertip will blow one to smithereens - but a properly delivered blow from a 16 pound sledge hammer is quite soul satisfying!!!!!!!! Good Luck and have a Great Day !
