Hi All:

Here are the results of running a brand new YS-110 on FAI fuel (the recommended YS fuel is between 15% and 30% nitro). I was constrained to use Zero nitro because of the lack of availabilty of good quality Nitro here in India and also the incredible price ($200/litre of Nitro !!). Based on this price, one can purchase a new YS 110 every 70 flights or so by running FAI fuel.

The Engine was brand new. A beautiful piece of engineering one must say.

On straight fuel (FAI: 78% Methanol, 10% castor, 12% synthetic), the result were as follows (with a 15x6 prop to run-in). 10% castor was used because the Methanol here in Bangalore now comes with a 10% mix of castor by local government regulation - apparently, some bootleggers used pure Methanol in illicit hooch and ended up killing 200 people recently in the bargain!

Back to the test results:

The engine started on the first flick : no problems

took it up to 4,000 RPM and ran it for 2 mins; no problems

maxed out the throttle for 10 secs : great transition; set high-speed needle to 1 1/3 turns (up from 1;25 to 1.33 basicallhy); came back to 4000 RPM (apparently this is recommended by YS Experts, specifically Troy Newman's blog). At this point, the engine started LOADING UP.

Closed the regulator 1/8 turn; marked improvement in transition; took engine up to max RPM (about 9500 but because of fading daylight the tach stopped reading after a while, so this is an estimate); came back down; much LESS loading up now

Closed the regulator another 1/8 turn; this time, the transition was even better; maxed out the engine for 10-15 secs and on coming back to 4,000 RPM, there was no more loading up!

Started setting the idle: about 2100 RPM (again, this needs to be reconfirmed because the tach stopped working in fading daylight). The engine started loading up at idle, Leaned out low-speed needle since the idle was too rich, so had to lean it out by a 1/4 turn

Result: the engine continued to run well. Transitioned up and down two or three times and then kept it at 4000 RPM.

Ran a 12 oz tank for about 11 mins. Not bad! With ZERO nitro, the engine runs well enough. with Nitro, the engine will likely run smoother and one can likely get 400 to 500 RPM more and turn a bigger prop. But that's not my goal. The goal is to enjoy the YS power with 500 less RPM on a smaller model!

Cleanup: stopped engine after 2 tanks (had to run errands after that), and had a helper remove the blue tubing and clean out the engine (to prevent Castor Oil gunk from clogging the engine), with Kerosene. I have since learned that the YS 110 has many internal Silicon parts and that kerosene may damage these parts - so the next time around pure alcohol or just the methanol fuel will be used for cleanup.

Next Steps: 2 more tanks at 4000 RPM or so and then some more experiments to ensure that the fuel mixture is never too lean. Setting the mix with ZERO nitro is tricky because one has to manipulate the regulator and after any regulator change both the needles (HS and LS) have to be tuned again. I'm at an altitude of 3000 ft. so the mixture has to be made as rich as possible. The Factory settings of the regulator and LS needle result in a mixture that is too rich for ZERO nitro and hence one has to follow Troy's instructions (http://www.patternflyer.com/troy/?page_id=13) to set the regulator, HS and LS needles.

Conclusion: YS Engines run great on no nitro. Just follow Troy's run-in instructions and you can't go wrong.

It must be borne in mind however that the engine has not been up in the air as yet. Also, WOT has not been applied for more than 10-15 seconds. On the two runs I had, the engine ran very cool, but with ZERO nitro in it and the leaner mixture, heat buildup is always a possibility. I guess the 22% oil (10% castor and 12% synthetic) helps protect the engine as much as possible. The plan is to start flying it in a month or so after I get my 69" Yak ready!

Great report Atul - thanks for sharing your experiences.

I have found that my YS engines run surprisingly cool and, for their power output, are quite economical.

As you mention, petroleum products like kero should be kept away from the regulator assembly.

Let us know how she performs in the air.
