I really don't think Viacom will be successful. The volume of videos uploaded to youtube, makes manual control over content impossible. I believe it will continue to remove videos based on copyright infringement as and when they are reported by the copyright holders. If Viacom wins, youtube may as well be shut down. As for free advertising, yes, a number of companies including Sony music entertainement have started uploading their own artists music to youtube, mainly under the heading of gaining exposure, as they would via radio broadcasts, which is not subject to royalty payment as far as I know. Be intersting to see how this one plays out.
