Hi,
need an expert help to unscrew my flywheel from my nitro engine (Team AE .15).
What's the best way to stop the piston without damage and be able to unscrew the flywheel?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Best way I've found is to take the backplate off and wedge a plastic toothbrush handle between the conrod and the inside of the crankcase.

Thanks for reply!

What about "piston Stoppers" i saw for sale at LHS or on the Bay? Some people say not to use them, can they damage the engine?

There is any other way to stop the piston without removing the backplate?

Thanks!

jc

Get a flywheel tool. There pretty cheap and do the job the right way. The piston stopper is something u would never catch me using...

You can use vise grips. Just put a rag over the flywheel and clamp the vise grips on teh flywheel. Not super tight but tight enough to keep from slipping. Then use a deep well socket for the nut. This way you wont risk damaging the pistion or con rod. Its easy and most people have some type of vise grips.

Do not jam the crankcase with anything!! trust me I ruined my first nitro engine that way. I covered the flywheel with a rag and used my glow wrench to unscrew the clutch nut. Then to take the flywheel off the crankshaft I held a blow-dryer to it for like a minute and it came right off.

Thanks for all your kind reply!

The problem is that since the flywheel is screwed on the crankshaft and not put by pressure the only way to take it away is to stop the piston so that is possible to unscrew it form the crankshaft.

At the moment there is only the flywheel left on the shaft, that's why i asked what's the best and safest way to stop the piston from working and be able to apply enough force to have the flywheel off.......
