Glitches.

I bought a Nextstar from a friend at the flying field yesterday and took it up with his 7Cap and the R127DF in the plane. It flew great without any glitching or issues. It range checked great too. I got the plane down and paid him and switched out only the Rx, so I could fly it with my radio. I have a new Mini6S that has only been used lightly to test servo throws on another plane I am building. It has the Hitec single conversion Cx for my channel. I turned the Tx on 10 seconds before turning on the Rx. It took a second, then centered the servos. I did the range check with the Tx antenna pulled down and at 35 paces. I wiggled the Tx a bit to see if it would chatter, and it was clean. I took it up and it flew pretty well, until I got to a certain spot in the pattern, where it did a little woopty-doo. It was pretty consistant in the same spot in the pattern, so I took it down and checked things out a bit.

Antenna routing.
The Nexstar routes the antenna thrugh a nylon rod between the pushrods all the way down the fuse, where it exits the bottom. This is how the R127DF was routed and only had a servo horn tied to the end, so it wouldn't back down the tube. I did the same thing with the Mini6S. The length of antenna seemed a bit longer (about 5 inches), so we left it slack (total of about 8 inches) and run out the back. We taped the antenna up around the verticle stab and tried it again. Same glitching, no real difference. Took it down again and this time I pulled it out of the nylon tube and routed it above the servo tray and out the rear top of the hatch and taped the end to the top of the verticle stab. I left the antenna a little slack, so there was a bit of droop in the wire (about 3 inches of droop). This time when we went up it was really bad and I had to have a friend with more experience take it back down. This time it was glitching all over the field and it was pretty scary.

OK, Is there something I am doing wrong? I never used the bobbin in the pack to take up any slack, but I could if that would somehow help. It is hard to know what to do when the other Rx and Tx combo worked so well. When we range checked it with the third setup (ant running out the top), it glitched really badly on the ground.

Did I get a bad Rx? Please help. I will only have a chance to fly maybe once a week, so whatever ideas you have, please let me know. I can do range checks, and extended range checks whener you would like me to try.
Thanks in advance,
Curtis

HFS-06MT aka Mini-6S has proved to be almost bullet proof except as noted "* Note: Not compatible with 9Z if using the synthesized module."
Which model Nextstar and which brand/model TX is now in use?
"I turned the Tx on 10 seconds before turning on the Rx." TX on first is imperative with any modern receiver but some Futaba TX take longer than 10 seconds to fully initialise - indicated by their beeping to confirm fully active and transmitting correct signal.
You changed RX but if EP version of the Nextstar, are you using the same ESC and battery pack? Disconnect ESC and try a range check with a standard 4.8v battery.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your reply.
The Tx is the Futaba 6EXAP. When I turn it on, I immediately get the beep on the TX, but I then wait a few seconds before turning on the Rx.

The Nexstar is the .46 version.

I did a range check yesterday in my backyard, just for kicks and everything appeared fine. Here is what I did:
Put the plane at one end of the lawn (have about .5 acres), and turned on the Tx, waited a few seconds, then the switch on the plane. walked directly back from the plane about 35 paces while swinging my Tx around (antenna collapsed). I wanted to see if the movement would make it go squirrely. I saw no flutter, but I was about 100 ft from the plane. I moved all of the control surfaces and they responded appropriately. no flutter or glitching.

I did the same thing again, but I started the engine and ran it up to full throttle. I swung the Tx around all over my head and around my body, but say no glitching. I was still not near the plane, however. All of the surfaces responded properly to their inputs.

I did take the battery and Rx out before this trial to inspect them. Here is what I found:
The two aileron servo wires were running out of the same side of the foam protection as the antenna (rerouted - only antenna comes out one side, all other servo wires out the other).
I ran the antenna above the tray, around one side of the servos and then into the antenna tube and all the way out of the body. I let the excess dangle out like before. The routing over the servo tray is different.
I took off one layer of protective wrap (before we had the neoprene around the Rx, then another layer of foam rubber), now just Neoprene around the Rx.
I double checked the seating of the servo wires and the battery wire - they appeared good.

Can you think of anthing else to try?

Thanks for your help. I am still a little gun-shy to try to fly it, but I didn't see any glitches yesterday, so I guess that is a good start.
Best Regards,
Curtis

Alan,
Do you have any other suggestions to try? I have been out to your website and looked through some of the articles regarding noise suppression and best practices, but other than what I described, I am at a loss for what to try next.
If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Best Regards,
Curtis

"I took it up and it flew pretty well, until I got to a certain spot in the pattern, where it did a little woopty-doo. It was pretty consistant in the same spot in the pattern, so I took it down and checked things out a bit." This may have related to the earlier antenna routing with signal, being blocked at one angle, as your range checks now appear reasonable.
If range tests have sunce been performed satisfactorily, with motor running, as described under "Range check and Range problem solving;' on my web page, then I would go fly. Hosweverm if any doubt remains, then do not hesitate to send the receiver in for a full check up:
