I was browsing Enya's website today when I stumbled upon this page.

http://www.enya-engine.com/DieselFuel_J.html

They are selling their own fuel, which isn't too surprising. The surprising part is they are selling a fuel blend using a synthetic lubricant, for the iron/steel piston/liner engines. In particular they recommend this fuel for the four stroke diesel. Maybe somebody remembers the discussion we had a year or more ago about fuel where I said that new synthetics are just as good as castor, particularly for diesels which tend to run much cooler than glow engines.

The prices of either blend are high and I doubt you can order through the site.

Hmmn-interesting Greg-I have here the original Enya 15D instruction leaflet and they referred to a fuel comprising:
Kerosene 37.5-36% Ether 37.5-36% Castor oil 25% Amyl nitrate 0-3%
a fairly normal mix-but perhaps not as high a kerosene proportion as some twin BB 2.5 diesels were running in those days. The leaflet also quotes powerr as 0.25 HP at 10,000 rpm and 0.30 HP at 15,000 rpm-which is right on the money for what I recall of the AM and MA tests on this version-so Enya unlike many others didn't exaggerate their performance claims.

I have hundreds of runs on an Oliver Jaguar reproduction diesel from Rustler Engines. I have flown it on a Playboy Cabin and made many runs on the test stand. I broke the engine in on castor first using Old English Mix. Then used the following Fuel 50% K, 32% E, 16% syn oil and 2% ignition improver. No damage to the engine after hundreds of runs. Iron and steel construction. Jack

Perhaps one contributing factor is that a glow engine will run when WAY over-lean and develop thermal runaway whereas a way over-lean diesel will just quit.

Chris, it would be interesting to know how much synthetic oil Enya has the fuel mix.

Jack, which oil were you using again? I have run Klotz R50 and I think I tried Maxima K2 last year. Not much run time though.

Greg, I used the Klotx 100% synthetic. Maybe KL-200? not sure the oil is out in a storage area with my fuel. I live in an apartment and the storage area, rented garage is a few blocks away. Jack

I've been running 50/50 castor and synthetic 2-stroke pre-mix oil for about a decade in my larger diesels (.09 and .15, the monsters on my workbench!) for about a decade. I tried it first with the remnants of a quart of syn/castor blend motorcycle oil I had around after the guys at the local bike shop convinced me that it would be fine for my ancient BSA 250cc single. After the first experiment I used a mix with synthetic for a short run after a flying session since it seemed to clean up the engines and leave them very easy to start whenever I flew them again. Eventually I just started using the 50/50 all the time for those engines.

Let's see. Percentages: 28/50/20 oil/fuel/ether and 2% cetane booster (figuring that if Johnsen's starting fluid was 50% ether as the MSDS indicated the other half could be counted as fuel components). Also, over time I took a shine to Ryobi's synthetic pre-mix oil since it makes a fuel with a lovely dark royal purple color that looks really good in clear plastic bottle I take to the field.

PS: Holy crap! I just looked at that Enya link and their fuel is ¥2310 and ¥2835 a liter! That's about US$23 and US$28. $100 a gallon for fuel.

Greg unless a Japanese member gets his hands on a container I doubt that we'll ever know! (especially at the price they're asking!)[that being said-a lot of commercial fuels seem to be trending towards 16% lube content these days-seemingly driven largely by the R/C car and/or heli market]

The one synthetic I have had experience of using is Castrol MSSR-which was developed by Castrol Australia in the early 70's specifically for use in model engines. It is largely a synthetic EDL gearbox oil, fortified with a bit of castor. Quite viscous, and a light honey colour. The viscosity set it apart from virtually every other synthetic I have seen. It ran very clean, and worked extremely well in both diesels and glows at all nitro levels. Only available in NZ now-and a horrendous price-the last time I priced it about 10 years ago-it was about $100 NZ ($75 US) for a 4 litre pack [a fraction over 1 US gal]
