what would be the benefit from moving up to a dx7 from a dx6i? and would a new heli pilot (like me) really use the added features? THANKS!

The Dx7 has a lot of nice features that are needed when flying a nitro heli. If you are going to do park flyers (under 2 pounds) and stay electric, the DX6i is wonderful and half the price, half the batteries, and lastest longer on the batteries.
The DX7 is a full range spectrum meaning it will go until you can no longer see the heli, although this is really only needed on 1/4 scale planes to be honest. I can fly my blade 400 out of sight before I loose range.
For the extra money, is the dx7 worth it? Yes, but if you are planing on staying electric heli then get the DX6i. It will do nitro planes, I don't think it will do nitro helis. That leaves around $150 for other items on your heli!

The DX6i is also a full range radio. It can work with nitro helicopters. The only thing you need the 7Ch for is a govenor. And you only need a govenor if you are doing 3D. Some people say the DX7 feels better than the DX6i. I am biased because I have a DX7. The only down fall I see with the Spektrum units are it can't do a 4 servo 90 degree swashplate. So you can't fly a Rapter or any other helicopter with that kind of swashplate or you can't fly a 3 servo 140 degree swashplate which is prefered over the 3 servo 120 swashplate. I think the new JR Vibe has the option for a 140 degree swashplate.
