hey guys have some good news and some bad news. i got my new p70 today . mounted it started it up. runs fantastic. starts on first cycle. well anyway. after about 7 start ups and testing i noticed the starter motor was not diengaging off of the compressor. the first few starts were fine. jet cat did install one of those tams jets fod cover and people have been saying it puts pressure on the starter . this same thing happened to my other p70. i think the stater gets misalighned. so anyway the o ring is wore down because of this running the whole time the engine is on. i called bob wilcox and he said he would fix anything that need to be fixed. i got the worst luck. well i already got it in the mail going back. he said he will have it fixed and back to me next week.. thats great but i cant keep sending this thing back everyweek. 50 dallors a pop is expensive. i hope it was something easy to fix. its brand new.. i think its the fod screen thats causing the issue. anybody on here ever seen this on a new or used engine. very upsetting because it runs so darn good....

I had this happen to me a few years ago, I cant remember if it was on one of my P-120s or P-160s. The bendix clutch would stay out and in contact with the spinner. When I touched it (only the slightest touch) it sprung back in to place. Yes it had to do with a little bit of missalighnment of the starter bullet casing, but I oiled the clutch a bit and problem was solved.

thats exactly what mine did. the slightest touch and it sprung back in. i think the o ring was gone because of the high rpms. i rather let jetcat fix it. 3 year warrenty.. bob told me not to oil the bendix because it gets into the o ring and will slip later on.. i think i will leave the fod off when i get it back.. i will just have to be carefull. i did put screens in the intake area of the fuselage... oh well has to get better i hope.... pat

Pat you worry to much, enjoy flying your airplane. Flying a turbine is very expensive.. you know this before you bought it. Today you could have problems with the starter and tomorrow you can have other problems , thats just the way it is. Enjoy and have fun flying your airplane.

My problem was a few years ago, jetcat germany told me to oil it carefully as to try and not get any oil on the o ring side of the clutch. Problem was solved in a minute and never happened again.

tino, i am not worrying i am concerned. i just got my new engine with the fod screen and the starter bendix is anot disengaging. i thing it got misalighned. hey i am new to turbines and i am the last guy to complaine abou expensive. so you think its normal to have problems. i dont think so. not on a motor with 5 minutes or so. i cant kjeep sending a motor back all the time. glad bob wilcox is a great guy and will have it fixed and back to me by next week.. i just want to have some fun. i am not having fun with this jet. i hope its fixed for good this time.. i paid good money for this engine. and you are not going to convince me you are going to have problems. maybe 25 hours from now i would say ok. but not 5 minutes...pat

I've also sorted my crow. Full landing flap is around 70degrees with approx 5degrees reflex. Landing flap needs a small down elev mix, comes in on 1/3rd power. Once I'm over our fence line, cut the power and she comes in nicely. Each flight i'm moving my CG back, but am really starting to enjoy flying it now.

Hi Dave, keep posting the adjustments you are making, will be using them myself shortly- took the plunge back into turbines with a sprint + Merlin combo.
Can you give deflections in mm for your surfaces? Any idea what your CG is now?
Finally do you use the air up/air down retracts from Sandor on yours? I cannot decide what is best, the use of air pressure to ensure the retract locks in when extending into the airflow, or the reliability of the spring down, in case of leaks..

Hi Guy's
I maidened my Sprint last Saturday (in 20+ knots wind), no problems!
It is very agile, a little more "alive" than the Baby Boomerang, and a little faster too.
I have a P60SE in it, 2 ltr fuel, no UAT, 8411 on all ruders, Hyperion HS20 UMD on the nose, Prolynx retracts from Digitech.
All defelctions set as in the manual, CG is 5 mm towards the tailheavy side, it needed very slight down elevator when going inverted
Saturday landing without flaps, had to use almost half throttle to get it in because of the wind, Sunday a little less wind so went with half flaps

(Max current consumption (peak) as shown on the DPSI BIC was 2.9 Amp on the maiden flight)

The plane balances with this configuration without extra weight in the nose.

Total build time: 4 evenings after work, started monday, finished thursday, and flew it on saturday

Only thing that is wrong with the plane: The covering ! I have ironed it down 5 times now, still comes loose

Can you tell I was happy :

Hi Carsten,

Congrats on your maiden!! When you write : It balanced ......configuration. What do you mean? That it balanced on the CoG according to manual with your set-up?

Hi Pete,

as I wrote above, CG is 5 mm towards the tailheavy side, so very close to the recommended CG (I think that all the Boomerangs are a bit "conservative" with the CG stated in the manuals)

Yep - reading is a difficult art........

If I am able to interpret it correctly, it means that you moved the C of G 5mm towards the tail..????

Yes thats correct Pete, I'm not sure that it's the reading thats the problem, more likely my writing !
(It's much easier writing it in Danish )

Carsten,

Congratulations . Indeed you look very happy!

Is this your first jet? Which other types of models did you fly before? I'm trying to prepare for what's also coming to me soon:

I just ordered mine, after following this thread for two months. Almost same config as yours, except JetCat only has the P70 in stock and I have a friend coming back from the US this weekend, so took advantage of his "free freight".

One thing I'll say, it was not an easy decision, there are lot of great kits out there which with retracts and all cost between $1300~$1900. At the end I picked the Boomerang because it's the most common in the Flying Club and I'd have plenty of people to help and give suggestions. And the Jetcat, same reason, we have a service rep here in the Campinas region of Sao Paulo who has all parts in stock, is an electronics engineer and understands very well the quirks and whatnots of the Jetcats. When you are in the remote and far corners of the world, service beats performance and price.

Hermann's Sprint BOM

On the subject of CONFIGURATION, on the helicopter threads we usually post the full BOM - Bill of Materials for the machines we build. I noticed this is not a common practice here on the "Jet-set". So, I apologize beforehand if this upsets anyone. I hope it doesn't violate forum rules either.

It's the list of things I purchased to build the Alan Cardash Boomerang Sprint:

- Boomerang Sprint kit - purchased through Patricia Cardash (very delightful lady to deal with!)
- 125oz fuel tank
- UAT
- Boomerang Spring Gear Combo Deluxe - prolink trailing link struts, intairco wheels, jettronic valves - purchased through Dreamworks
- 6 x Futaba 3305 (124oz, 8.9kg @ .20 sec @ 6V) servos for aileron (2), flap (1), rudder (2), steering (1) - purchased them all the same for commonality of parts - in the heli world everytime we have a bad landing we strip a few servos, so I have gear kits for my servos. Keeping them the same, reduces the diversity of spare parts needed.
- 1 x Futaba 9156 (340oz, 24.5kg @ .17 sec @ 6V) servo for Elevator - I know it's overkill.
- Servo city servo power board - to distribute the 6V directly from regulator to servos without going through receiver. It's a passive power distributor, nothing to fail.
- 2 x Hercules BEC Linear 2S 10amp regulators - I prefer them redundant and separate power supplies, rather than two on one circuit board like you have with expanders and powerboxes...
- 2 x Switch harness Futaba - which I'll convert for use with the Hercules regulators as failsafe switches.
- 2 x OUTRAGE XPRX 2S1P 7.4V 2500mAH - LiPos - use them in Helicopters all day without problems, and we have plenty of vibrations. These are good for 6 fligths, each to its regulator, they connect through the servo power board above.
- 1 x FUTABA R608FS 2.4GHZ FASST RX 8CH - for the 10CHP transmitter
- 1 x Hysol Glue Kit - following plenty of the advice given here on this thread... as important as the reliable power source
- 1 x Heat Shield (BVM-1940) - for the fuselage parts surrounding the P70
- 1 x Jet Pilot - Blue Angels (DW-CPBA) - to go with the Blue/Yellow/White color scheme of the Spring
- 1 x BVM Wingtip Skidz - for the inevitable...
- 1 x Ceramic Blanket - for the hot end of the P70. I may also cover it with a sheet of aluminum cut to suit.
- 1 x Dubro Pull-Pull System 4-40 - which is shown on this thread for the steering control of the Prolynk nose wheel/strut

TOOLS which will serve for future builds:
1 x SMC Tubing Cutter
1 x Hysol Mixing Nozzle - Long
1 x Foam Field Stand
1 x Festo Release Tool
Aluminum tape - you can find this on any full size airplane store
Safety wire pliers and safety wire - same as the alu tape
Ear protection mufflers - same as above

Ok, I'm off the soap box. Comments are always welcome.

Thanks for all who contribute to this thread, it is an invaluable resource.

Hermann

Hi Hermann,
thanks for your comments!
No, this is not my first jet, I started with two Baby Boomerangs (I wanted redundancy ), I sold one of them once I felt I could manage the plane safely (after 70+ flights on one of them), at the same time as the Baby Boomerangs I also built a few others, a Eurosport, Rookie II, Elan etc....

I started flying modelplanes two years ago, and I spent A LOT of time at the field flying all kinds of planes, both electrics and Nitro planes. I then gradually moved towards Gas engines, and currently have a 2.18M QQ Yak, a 2.6M comp-arf Extra, and a 2.7M comp-arf Pitts S12 (not yet flown). I started with the Baby Boomerang 1 year after my first flight with a model, and the model is still alive
I'm 43 years old, so not exactly "young", if I can learn to fly a jet, so can everyone !
The Baby/Sprint Boomerang is easy to handle, just get an experienced modeller to help you out the first few times!

Carsten,

I'm 43 as well! But this will be my first jet...

I'd be curious to ask your opinion and comparison on the Rookie vs. Eurosport vs. Boomerang? Which is your favorite? By the number it looks like the Boomerang, so the next question is why?

Thanks!

Hermann

Anyone know if the retracts/struts/wheels from an Intro will work in a Sprint?

I have now finished my Sprint and waiting for some nice weather so the snow melts away from the runway

Ps the only thing now is the broken canopy that was broken on delivery and still no news of a replacement.
