Sorry Alan, I saw the grooved pins and "Assumed" that it was the same as the Baby.

I didn't see any close up pics of the underside of the hatch.

My apologies for making assumptions without actually seeing how it was set up.

Best Regards,

Bob

CHCarlos,

Thank JetCat for the stupid offset mounts they provide!
My idea wouldn't work with normal (centered) mounts.

Hi,
For those of you who would like to tint the canopy of the new Boomerang Sprint, I just tried my old way of tinting canopies and what a great surprise. My complements to Alan on the quality material he used. Here is how I did it. I used 2 packs of Rit Dye and mixed it into 3 gallons of water along with ¾ cup of salt. This was done is a large stainless steel container. I had a candy thermometer clipped to the side and brought the temperature up slowly until it reached 150 degrees. I was constantly stirring until the proper temp was reached. Just before I put the canopy in the Dye, I washed it with warm soapy water on both sides then rinsed it clean but did not dry it. From there it went straight into the Dye. I pulled it out 4-5 times until the density I wanted was reached. I used a Navy Blue but probably should have used a Royal Blue. After about 35 minutes, I pulled it out for the final time and rinsed it off with warm soapy water then dried with a soft cloth. The color obtained was about a 25% bluish gray which is exactly what I wanted. Total investment, $3.00. Total time with prep, 1 hour. Great material to work with. The black trim from the factory was not even affected.
Thanks for a greatProduct Alan!

Doc…

Hi Guys,
I'm finally getting around to posting some pictures and video of my Sprint...........here is a video of it flying off the grass at one of our clubs local fields.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pgTDY4iT4I

I now have 37 flights on the Sprint and 80% of them are from grass strips. It does real well on both Pavement and grass!

I used a set of BVM 3.5 inch wheels and brakes, from my T-33 for the mains.......turned the tires down to 3.25 inches and they fit great in the wheeel wells. Then made a longer trunion for the nose gear and added 1/2 inch of spacers to keep the positive angle of attack on the gear.......... with that size of mains, and the DreamWorks trailing link gear, it will handle any grass situation you find at model fields.

Alan's great design and the Dreamrwoks gear make this one plesant airplane to fly..........

Hi Again,
Here is some close ups of the turned down wheels and the nose gear extension.............and one of the equipment board installation.
The pic of it in the deep grass shows what it will take off from...........

Finally finished my buddy's Sprint and did the maiden flight on Sat. It is powered by a Jet Central Falcon and is a perfect combination. It also has Pro-Link gear from Dreamworks and Jet-Tech Kevlar tank (Elan). The plane needed a few ounces of lead to balance at the 250mm mark. I opted to replace the harware with TamJets control horns, Sullivan clevises and 4-40 rods. Apparently the supplied hardware is adequate, but my personal preference was to change it. The recommended elevator throw is perfect, the other throws should compliment your flying style.

On the maiden, the jet accelerated quickly and was airborn needing only a couple clicks of down elevator and right aileron trim. The Sprint flys very well and has zero bad habits. The plane has a ton of power and vertical performance is off the chart with this engine. All-in-all, this is a great flying plane and might possibly be the best flying Boomer with the exception of maybe the XL (it's a very close call, AND yes, I have flown all four).

Hi all.

I flew my Sprint for the first time this past weekend, and I can only second what George says. It flies really well.

Mine needed a lot of down trim though, so I think I need to do some adjustments to the setup. Don't know what happened, but the incidence on the tail is not correct. Mine is equipped with a SimJet 1200 12 lbs turbine and it is just perfect for me.

First picture shows the elevator setting for neutral flight.

I agree with George..........I used the Tam Jet horns.

Alan has ply inserts on both sides of the control surfaces and when you slot one side and aeropoxy the horn in, it's very solid and strong.
I used the sullivan clevises with the one at the servo silver soldered and the other one left adjustable with a locking nut. Z bends are fine but are seldom smooth and wear the servo arm hole over time.
I only used 2-56 rods because all but the rudders are very short linkages.....but there's nothing wrong with using the 4-40's for piece-of-mind.
I also servo taped the servos to the covers and then screwed them in place, for a non moving, secure mount. JR 8611's on the aileron and elevator..3421's on the rudders.

Mine also required some down trim................ended up putting a .030" shim under the front stab mounting screw. This gives the stab a 1.25 deg of positive, but no longer requires the down trim.
I may try taking this out and shimming the motor slightly positive..........because it has steepened the glide some.

I've received a couple of inquiries on the size and mounting of the engine...........

I used the Jet Cat P-70, which I already had.........with it's almost 18 pounds of thust, it seemed like the Sprint was a good match for it, and it certianly is.

The Sprint weighed in at 18 pounds 2 oounces with 6 ounces of weight in the front of the nose to balance per instructions.

The P-70 is quite fuel efficient, I only fill the tank with 96 ounces of fuel and after and 8-9 min flight have about 30 ounces left.

I have since removed the 6 ounces of nose weight and it flies even better.........very little down required inverted and very small corrections for rolls........and the landings are even slower, and smoother.

I used the BVM mounts with 4-40 screws and drilled a 1/8 inch holes in each mount for alignment dowels.

I also wraped the overflow line completely around the tank before exiting the fuesalage bottom becaues I was drawing fuel out during spins and snap rolls, and long inverted manuevers.

Hi.
I would like to know if anyone is making a tail pipe for the Sprint. I'm hearing different things about a heat problem. Alan mentions nothing about protection
from heat nor does Ali M. in his video. Additionally, by my own choise, I also switched and used the Central Hobbies control rod system.

You may want to try shimming the front of the engine up slightly, but his may affect the flight characteristics (haven't tried it yet). You are right though, this is a problem.

We ended up covering the bottom of the stab and servo cover with aluminum tape and will see how things turn out after some more time on it.

Yes, this is a problem. I posted a question about this earlier in the thread. I noticed heat build up under the horizontal stab, so I shimmed the front of the engine up and also put aluminum tape under the stab as I feared for the JR 8700's life. I ran the engine with the shims and noticed a difference in temp on the ground. What happens in the air is another story...Has anyone else noticed this and what solutions have you come up with?

Hi Guys,

I installed the aluminum Tape to the leading edge of the stab after reading about heat problems. I'm only using a P-70 but I now have 42 flights on the Sprint, and cant see any problems with excess heat at the tail............

Do other engines put out a larger diameter exhaust blast? Because I have even checked the lower side of the stab with a infrared temp probe and found it to stay only slightly warmer than the top ( around 95to 100 deg on a 85 deg day) and that was after 3 min of taxi testing both up and down wind. From what I'm reading there must be a difference in what type of engine is used?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your response on the heat problem. Good point on the size engine Gypsy. I was planing on using a P-80 but I may now go to the P-70. The new p-80's now deliver
21 lbs of thrust so I have to believe the exaust blast is larger. My Sprint won't fly until next spring or summer and I havn't purchased the Turbine yet so I will continue to monitor
this issue. Do you think it would be safe to paint severeal coats of BVM heat shield in the entire engine compartment or maybe Alum tape?

Hi Doc,

It certianly won't hurt to protect it.........before my Sprint the only Boomerang I had any experience with, was helping a friend with his intro many times this past year, I notice the rear of the cover held a fair amount of heat after each flight. He also flys his with a P-70.

Because of this, I covered the rear of the engine compartment, both in the fuse, and on the hatch, with a layer of BVM Ceramic heat blanket, and then one coat of the BVM heat shield.

I do believe Alan has done it right with the extra room around the engine in the Sprint. the top hatch and fuse stay just slightly warm.....so it may not have been necessary, but it's a comfort to have it there.

Hi Gypsy,
I agree 110%. You know what they say; "An oz of prevention is worth a pound of cure". With Turbines there are so many things that can go wrong at least this is one we can control. I'm new to Turbines but did DVF's for 10 years. I've been away from planes for awhile doing the Heli thing. I've been the National Tres. for IRCHA the past 10 years but just can't get Jet's out of my blood and never will. It's about the end of the flying season here in MI so I'll have plenty of time to finish this Sprint. What about you? When do you plan to have yours finished? Keep an eye on the next issue of R/C Jet's International. There will be a feature article on the Sprint. Thanks for the pictures.
Talk to you soon,
Doc...

Gypsy,

So, your the reason gas prices are so high. Let's see, 44 flights, maybe 80 oz per. That comes to 3,520 oz of fuel.
That's 27.5 gallons. What oil well do you own? O'well, still better than niitro!
Enjoy,
Doc...
