I have been reading the jetboat thread for the last few hours, and I'm really impressed with the stuff you guys have done. I do have some questions about this stuff, because I am about as new as you can get to any of this.

I have owned jetboats for years now, and am very familiar with how to set them up. A lot of what you guys are doing is so close to real world applications, that I am truly amazed at what you have all done. The 'trim tab' if you wanna call it that, is exactly what is used in full sized applications, only it's called a ride plate. The purpose is to trick the boat into thinking it is longer than it really is, which allows for more power, the motor being set back further than it normally would be, and ultimately with a better ride... ideally to eliminate porpoising. Encompassing a water pickup off the jet nozzle, or even off the suction housing for cooling purposes made me chuckle out loud because that is exactly how real jetboats work.

That being said, I do have a ton of questions.

1. I am looking at building a jetboat in the 24"- 36" range, mono hull. I don't have any idea who makes a good one, that can take a little abuse. I will not be running rapids or anything; I just don't want something that I will break in half in an afternoon. Fiberglass? Carbon Fiber? I have no idea. Is there a formula of sort that can help one figure out what drive / motor / hull won't porpoise, or not have enough power? What hull do you guys recommend?

2. I was looking at the swashdrive jets originally, but they seem to be indefinitely backordered. My next option was to get one of these.

I don't know if that's a good one or not, or if it's too big/small, and if the driveshaft can be mated up with any motor with a coupler or not. When it comes time to cut a hole in the hull for the pump, do I glass it in? They are thru-bolted in real life; don't know how you guys do it. What about the motor, do I glass that in? In a hull that sized, I could machine a little rail kit (again, how it's done in the big boats) and glass that in, and bolt the motor to that.

3. What motor to use? Brushless I imagine, but I don't know. I will be running a cooling system I'm sure, just like a lot of you guys have. I would like (if possible of course with a hull this size) to see some good speed, but I don't wanna burn out the drive because it is spinning faster than it oughta be. But, like most of us, I'd like to put a kick ass motor in.

4. Batteries. Is there a trick way to mount them, or are they just zip tied somewhere inside the hull? LiPo? Based on what motor you may recommend, is there a certain battery pack that I should definitely use? How long of a life can I expect for each run? Ten minutes or so, or maybe longer? I will most likely pick up a few packs and always have one ready to go.

I guess I better buy a dremel soon, and get this going. Never done it before, and honestly I'm really looking forward to monkeying around with this stuff. Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can offer.

You may want to ask about hulls and jets in that dedicated thread as I won't be of any help there. You may also want to state a budget as prices increase greatly with larger hulls, there is a large difference in quality vs not quality equipment, ect.

A brushless motor with water cooling should be used. There is a direct relationship with voltage of the battery and Kv of the motor. You must match these items. You will be most likely looking at a Hydra 120 or even Hydra 240 for a speed control. (ESC)

Based on your size of hull desired, you will be most likely running 4 or 6 cell LiPo. To mount them I use a velcro strap. The motor is mounted to some sort of custom made mount or purchased mount.

Oh, R/C is real life too, welcome to RCU!

Ryan

Yea, you will most likely be looking at the feigao XL series motors. Maybe a 10xl on a 5s lipo(4000mah+). Then either a hydra 120 or a turnigy 100A esc(cheap but work well too). You could also possibly use a kb(l series) motor as well, but those are monsters and amp hogs. You can buy cooling jackets for these for only $20, or you can make them your self, your choice. You will also want a decent servo, high torque. Now for radio, considering you dont have one. I would buy a decent fm radio, and if you have the money, a 2.4ghz faast radio. For the hull i would post in the jet drive thread to see, they have experiance with different hulls and how they perform.

Thanks for the tips. I will put a link to this thread over in the jet thread.

Hey country why don't ya talk to cat on the jet drive forum, he just finished building something simlilar to your specs, he's working out the bugs but supposedly it's a proven hull and setup.

I was just finishing reading his posts in the 'unofficial' thread. Is there a dedicated thread for his build somewhere that I am missing?

I know alot of this is trial and error, so I will have to jump in with both feet. I am pretty sure I want to use the jet drive that I posted earlier, so I have to pick a motor and battery combo. Some suggestions in here are helpful, but to be honest I am lost on alot of the terminology. [4000mah mated with an xyz?] etc, etc. I don't know what any of that means, I will just have to keep reading.
In idiot's terms, which is what I speak best... "I want that jet drive with a big motor, a big battery pack, solid components, and a tough hull."

Maybe I should start by picking a hull. Alright, who makes a kick ass tough hull that can be mated to a jet drive fairly easily? I would prefer not to buy one made for a kit that I will have to tear apart, but rather just a bare hull that I can start cutting, building, painting, etc. Is there a company / website that sells a variety of bare hulls ready to ship? Do you experts think I will see decent speed out of a hull that size (30" or so) with that jet and a good size motor? 10xl?

Well prop driven boats are faster, that setup i listed is able to hit speeds over 55mph. On a jet driven boat, it should hit 25-30mph.

Hi,

Check out: http://www.jet-drive.de/cms/index.php?lang=en

IMHO the best jets available.

I could possibly make up some plans for you, you want a 30in boat?

I just threw that number out there, since I'm not trying to build a race boat, I thought a bigger hull would be more stable and more 'cruisable' if that makes any sense. I will check out that link, thanks.

the drive you have picked is huge is a 40mm drive . and well do the same speed as the 29mm but it can push a big hull in the 32-40" range if you wont to stay in the 24-36 range i would go with the 29mm drive . then you would need a 36mm motor around 3000kv on 14.8v and you would be hitting around 30-35 mph . if you checked out my youtube video of 22.2v big blue you will see it in action . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJNx468n45E . hulls are a hit in the air i would go with something like the vallian ,nitro vee , aqua jet , or a shallow v with the wides you can find . the wildthing hull is a good example of the shallow v its pretty close to a jet sprint in shape .

custom, I'll send you an email in a bit, thanks.

I checked out your vid DRAGON, pretty cool. Something about that speed would be a blast.
For a pre-made hull, what about this sprint model?

http://www.jet-drive.de/cms/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,79/category_id,42/manufacturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,17/

It's about 26" long, and kinda "ready to drop in components"; at least, that's what it sounds like. Is this close to the sprints you other guys were messing with?

allout that's pretty cool, ya might need the plate on the bottom though... quicksilver could describe the length of the... aghh... ventura(can't remember the word now) .

As for the hull if you truely aren't running rivers, it doesn't really matter then because you can strengthen any hull if needed with a coat of glass or more, the knock offs are complete plastic and others and I have put them through hell and not a single hull issue yet. I also have a traxxes villain(so does quick) modded to take jet drive, but it's a little more work than something that was designed in the beginning for it. I think the fastest jet drive that kehrer operates runs 50km max, I'm assumin with your background that ya know unless your doing the work yourself(making or modding the jet drive or impeller) that this is the max speed of one of their drives. The graupner drives have no numbers, motor suggestions, rpm running etc so it's much more difficult to figure out what motor to get for those drives and how many rpm amps etc. But they are also a lot cheaper than the kehrer drives, esspecially shipping. If I were you, I would send a personal message to cat to ask him about his build. It's in there(thread), he had started with a similar request as you, maybe 10 pages back or so.

Ivan.
