slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/25/2008 9:36 PM)

Ryan: I guess my concern is with the carb problem...My thinking is the walbro 813 would be better to help with the bog responce I am having..
Yes this is getting to be a large thread..and I am soaking in the knowladge from every one of the nice people who are helping me bring this firehammer back to life..
So far it is running and I can drive it..compared to the state I got it in..With out the wonderful help I would be lost in this giant scale of RC...
Thanks for your reply...Roger

ryan@ddm -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/25/2008 9:56 PM)

Yes, the 813 often helps reduce low-end bog. Additionally, you may want to consider changing your piston ring and cylinder gasket if the engine has not been serviced in a while.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/26/2008 2:59 PM)

Ok... As suggested by Ryan from DDM to change the piston ring...From the orig owner.. Stated it is a CY29CC engine...So is there a stamped number on the piston?
How do you measure the piston ring?I have had the engine running and put 1 tank of fuel thru it ,,but seems too smoke quite a bit..Possiable bad piston ring..,,My carb setting are High Side 1 1/8 turn out same as for the low side..Carb is a Walbro 668..seems to bog down when given it a quick throttle responce...If you ease the throttle its seem to be some what smoother...Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help...Roger

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/26/2008 7:00 PM)

OK ..Nice sunny day..Thought let's play with the firehammer...NOT..I have a small stand I set the firehammer on to start up..It fired right up..rear wheels spinning...good thought..sat firehammer on the ground and the engine killed....put back on stand ..started right up...put on ground again ..engine killed again...Put back on stand..started right up..Now I applied the brakes..engine killed..
Ok thought in trouble here..reset the carb back to factory setting...It this point I have both needles set 1 turn open..starts right up ..Idle is super crazy high..so turned the Idle screw out to bring the rev's down..Applied the brakes again..same thing engine killed...Now I know this is simple to adjust..But what am I missing here..Please help...Roger
EDIT: Oh the vent line is clear and the exhaust is clear..nothing blocking them...

davido666 -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/26/2008 9:23 PM)

You might have a broken clutch spring. Make sure the clutch shoes are not dragging. remove the clutch bell pinion gear and try to spin the bell by hand to make sure it is free.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/26/2008 10:52 PM)

David066:Thanks for the reply..Now there's a thought...Ok I checked the clutch..It spins free..My thought on is is possiable air leak..I have had about 2 hours too think this thru..So I want too
DDM's site..There is a general guide for walbro carbs...I am going to try there recomandations..If all else fails ..I will order a new carb monday..
Does any body else have any suggestion?..Thanks.. Roger

ryan@ddm -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/27/2008 2:46 AM)

1) Look at the stamping on the base of the cylinder. A CY29RC engine should say 30-35 (thats 30mm stroke, 35mm bore). You'll need a 35mm piston ring.

2) No power under load can indicate poor compression, a plugged exhaust, etc.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/27/2008 2:54 AM)

Ryan:Thanks for your reply..I had the exhaust pipe off about 3 days ago ..Inlet on exhaust pipe was clean..Out let on the cylinder exhaust port was clean ..slightly discolored..
I will check for those numbers..Thanks..Roger

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/27/2008 3:23 PM)

UPDATE: After having problems with the walbro 668 carb..Don't seem to be any air leaks..I have ordered a differnet carb..Walbro 813 with the mod shaft and alloy intake manifold
this should help for any air leaks...May be the stock intake manifold has a hair line crack..I think there made from bakeolite or a simular product...
This tuning is really getting me PEED off....Any suggestions would be very helpful..I would like to try later today to get it running to play with...Thanks for your help,,Roger

kengentry5000 -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/28/2008 2:17 PM)

It dying when you take it off the stand and putting it on the ground is pretty weird. It seems like I had this happen before a couple of years ago but damned if I can remember the issue. I've never had any clutch spring problems but other have had it happen.

Probably unrelated but do the wheels spin on the stand without any throttle? If so, is your throttle servo pushing the carb linkage all the way back with no transmitter input? If not you might need to trim out your transmitter and/or reposition the servo horn so the carb is all the way off with no throttling from the transmitter.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/28/2008 2:47 PM)

KenGen: Thanks for your reply..Yes the wheels spin on the stand..I will reindex the throttle servo..Now that never occured to me..
It just mlght be some thing that simple...It is worth a try until the new carb get's here..Hope by this week end..I look forward too each day I can play with the RC toys..
I have nothing better to do..Oh maybe go fishing...And I look forward to e-mail form my rc friends..Thanks again..Roger

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/30/2008 8:57 PM)

UpDate: Hot Diddie Dog parts just arrived...So I will start the tear down on the enigne and do other up grades tonight..
So with a little bit of luck I will have running some time in morning or late afternoon..Thanks for all the input..
Oh.. I am not sure did Hellya say he was selling parts or he use too..If so Great ..I could use some items...
Thanks again too you all..Roger
EDIT:Oh yah I almost forgot I am from the old school on gaskets where you permatexed every thing..So on the intake and carb
do I do them dry or use permatex..

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/31/2008 3:44 PM)

Ok..KENGEN: Good call in post #135 I was in the process of installing the new alloy engine mounts..Had to take off the gear plate ..in doing so the clutch bell came off
good thing..found broken spring and shoe...Clutch bell is stainless ..looks good no damage..Tryed to measure the bell ..think 54 mm as best as I can tell..So what do I do
here.. replace with standard clutch or up grade too a better one?I still have a couple things I can do ..So I will have too order clutch shoes and spring...So I guess I will be on hold
again for parts....Thanks for your help ..Roger

dazzza1978 -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/31/2008 11:01 PM)

Just replace with standard parts. The stock clutches in these rigs are very reliable.

People generally only upgrade if they are a bit more serious about there cars, for racing etc. or just like to spend coin on there cars.

I have sent you a pm.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (7/31/2008 11:07 PM)

I know the photo's are a little washed out there in last post...Ok I installed the alloy engine mounts..Installed the electroinc kill switch..Tied into the harness on the engine's kill switch..Made a pig tail
come out thru the spark plug grommet..used two disconnects push /pull type.So can be taken apart if need to remove the engine from chassie..Also early today got clutch shoes with the red springs
ordered..Was told that should be here on Sat..Man I tell you. I don't thing is was such a good deal from e-bay...But my son's did try there best..The way it's going.. Just shy of new in box price..
But too be honest with you all.. I have had a good time rebuilding this firehammer..I think I could now build a ss baja kit...So I am on work stoppage until Sat...Many Thanks to you all for your support..
Really looking forward to enjoy this now..Roger

Lars from Norway -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 1:25 PM)

Yes,the stock clutch is good.Is the red clutch-spring engaging on a bit higher rpm than the stock spring?

davido666 -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 1:27 PM)

Thats what I thought it would be a broken clutch spring.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 1:52 PM)

David066: Yeah you called it right...I get you guys mixed up in here on the forum..I want too give credit where do...Thanks for that..Yes you all are a great help...I did check before..
took off the spur gear..clutch supn free and no rubbing or noise..
Lars: To my knowladge the red spring is too engage higher rpm..From what info I got from Dave's motors...
My son took care of that for me..ordered the stock clutch shoes and upgrade to red spring...should be here Sat afternoon...
Many thanks to all you guys..You are a god sin to this hobby in helping others with your knowlage of things that you may have happen to you..Roger

kengentry5000 -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 3:57 PM)

While you're total cash out-lay is close to a "new in the box" truck you have a ton of upgrades in the process. Imagine buying a new truck, breaking plastic and then buying all these upgrades on top of the new truck cost.

I paid $575 for my gently used Firehammer buggy and it gave me a lot room to buy hop-ups.

In my opinion buying used is usually a good way to go with gassers if you're on a tight budget.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 4:00 PM)

Ok... New bling...I install a alloy intake with teflon spacer..I know not that interesting to some of you guys ..But too me I am have a good time making things
better for my firehammer..Thanks for all those who have helped me..Roger

Lars from Norway -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 4:07 PM)

Always nice with a touch of bling[;)]

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 5:05 PM)

Lars: To me every thing that is added now is Bling...
KenGen: yup..I am a head of the game..My son's told me they got the firehammer from e-bay for
500 bucks with shipping...Or some thing like that...They were not real clear on it in fact..The boys have been real great and have ordered what ever I wanted to make the firehammer better..
I know I have pretty well maxed out there credit cards on this project...I am greatful to them and for all the kind wonderful prople
here in the forum...For the help and support...A few things I would like too up grade yet..But those can wait until winter time...Both alloy uprights for
the wheels...I just hate bearings in plastic..Now with just a couple parts coming..Should be here Sat..I will be ready too fire this up and run the hell out of this firehammer...
Thanks again..I will keep you all posted how things go..Thanks again..You all have made this old man proud to have a 1/5 scale unit....Roger

davido666 -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 8:27 PM)

It's looking good.

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/1/2008 8:32 PM)

David066: Thanks for the reply...No packages today...postman was just here..Yes slowly I am getting the firehammer in great shape...Too bad
the orig owner did not take better care of it..But that's the chance you take from e-bay or any auction...Pictures always ..looks good ...
I will keep every one posted on how things go...Thanks again ..Roger

EDIT: For spelling

slawhammer -> RE: New to the 1/5 scale RC world (8/2/2008 1:00 PM)

Ok... I have had this firehammer for what 3 weeks now...Every thing pretty much taken apart...On looking at this.. I now think a couple weak spots are 1.being the servo tray
made of plastic..that can flex.. 2. would be the gear cover also made same type of material the body is ..another weak point...Now If they made those items out of metal
it would be better..I have been searching the inner net RC sites for those items ..But have had no luck so far..I am sure there made...Still waiting on parts to arrive...
Thanks for all the help...Roger
