Hi there,

My boyfriend has asked for an R/C car as a gift - I know absolutely nothing about them so I was hoping to gain a little knowledge on this forum so I can get him a gift he would be happy with.

I live in Toronto, Ontario and have been able to locate several shops so I know where to go I just don't know what to get.

He is very into modified and tuned cars. He had a 2004 Subura Impreza which he modified like crazy. His tastes in vehicle are along the lines of Subaru, Mitsubisi Evo, BMW M3, Audi RS4, Infiniti G35, Nissan Skyline...

So with that being said, I am assuming a nitro on-road car would be my best choice. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that...

I am looking to spend $300-$400 (CDN) on the car and realize there are things like fuel, glow ignitor and battery I need to pay for as well.

I have looked at the HPI Racing RS$ Evo+ RTR cars and thought that might be a good entry level car for him - any other suggestions? Not sure what brands are good...

I am completely open to suggestions and would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks very much!

well those are definetly the way to go.
im kind of new to the whole nitro thing to, but those are really good cars
and HPI is a huge distributor of parts too so thats especially good if he's into moding them
parts will be alot easier to find without having to order

I say go with the HPI RS4 3, that was also my first RC car. It's a great car to learn on, it can be heavily modified if you choose too, and parts are easy to find. Plus HPI makes tons of bodys to fit that chassis, so if he wants a subaru then he can get a subaru body and it will fit perfect. He'll have fun with it.

Geez, I wish I could find a girl that did that for me.............so..... you got any sisters, lol. jk

Thanks guys...seems like I was on the right track with which way to go! I know he will want to modify it and make it his own and by the sounds of it the HPI one is the way to go - its good to have options for upgrading down the road.

Jpsonoma, funny enough, I do have a sister! She is a cutie!

Trying to pick gifts for guy is hard!

most hobby shops will give you the AA batteries that you will need, but if it comes with a roto start your boy friend will need a 7.2v battery back. also a good rechargeable battery pack would cost about $20-25. also you will need nitro fuel. some hobbys shops may give you a quart for free either or they will recomend the proper fuel for the nitro car.

So I went tonight and bought him the HPI Racing RS4 Evo+ RTR car...It has the Cuda body which I did not like, so I ordered him the orange HPI Impreza body to swap over - that should be good?

Thanks for all your advice guys!

good choice with the RS4 evo+
those have a more powerful engine then the standard evo's
and i do believe have more upgradeable pieces for them over the standard evo's

Woah woah woah, you DON'T like the cuda! I'm from the detroit area, you can't talk like that! Hahaha I'm just messin with you.

Hope he likes it, and I'm sure if he has any questions we'll be able to help him out on here.
Just an FYI, hpi makes like 5 different subaru bodys, so if he wants to buy one and paint it like his real car, he can.

the HPI rs4 3 evo+ is a great starter car, simple to use, simple to work on, and very reliable....plus aftermarket support like crazy.

just add fuel, batteries, and a glow plug ignitor.

good choice...he will love it!...make sure he breaks it in properly, before tearing up and down the street.

im picking up my RS4 evo 3+ soon too...i cant wait to get back into this hobby...this will be my 5th HPI (4 on-road, 1 savage)

first thing im doing is primerless fuel tank, fiber brake disc, longer fuel line, and a pull start....i think the rotostart is nothing but a pain in the arse....pull starts are like $12 a piece...buy 2-3 and youll get through the whole spring, summer, and fall if your rough on them.

once he gets his gift, point him in the direction of this forum, and watch him go crazy with mod's.
