Hi,

I'm looking at .40 size engines and muflers, and like the idea of the Silent Muffler from Super Tigre, like the one included with their own GS40. My questions is, never having heard one run, how much quieter are they really? Are they quite a bit quieter than the typical .40 muffler, or is it more of a "sales pitch" type of thing. Thanks for any info!

"Silent muffler" is just a name. They are no quieter than anything else. Most modern, 40 size engine are relatively quiet with their stock mufflers.

I dont like ST mufflers very much the always seem to leak and are hard to get bolted down good enough. I really like the engines but think a muffler upgrade is a good option on them.

With that said... if I was going to buy a 40 sized engine I would go TT pro 46 not ST.

The Super Tigre engines with the "Silent Mufflers" are probably the loudest engines at the field. I don't think they have any kind of baffles inside them. They are definitely louder than stock OS mufflers, even with the baffles removed. I have also had problems with my Super Tigres blowing out the muffler gaskets.

Same here, I find them as loud as any typical .40 at least. I never use that gasket, it seldom survives break-in. I use RTV instead.

The only thing I like about them is the adjustable lenght header. Too bad it's not better implemented. It tends to gall to the muffler, the clamp slot leaks exhaust and the clamp sometimes slips.

I do like their engines, tho they're not as easily tuned as OS/TT, they do run well and produce gobs of power, about equal to the OS in this respect.

Thanks guys. I am surprised at what I am reading. I figured they really were quieter.

They are problematic really. On my old Super Tiger .45, I bolted on a Macs muffler and was a lot happier. It was smaller, lighter, sealed better and sound levels were similar.
