Whats with this thing? Had a crash and hit the ground during a hover from 3 feet. Replaced spindle, main shaft, dampers, blades, one blade holder. What would allow it to run for 5 mins perfectly and than it (the heli) cuts the power to 1/2 or less (without me moving the throttle) causing it to land from a hover. Sounds like it bogs down, New battery. Could I have something in wrong? Any closeups of how the head should look? Thanks Ron

you may have somthing binding.. like gear meash or the tail belt or you may have a bad esc or battery

Hi,

Like AUTO said, could be something binding. I had the samething happen to me on two occassions. The first time it was the upper gear and one-way bearing. The gear collar had split which allowed the bearing to move and jam, no lock up but the Heli went nuts because the main shaft was now half bound and I went down. The second time this happened I was just lifting off and then about 3 feet high I hear a screech, like a dry bearing and down she came again. That was found to be the one of the tail bearings had gone bad and did not let the shaft roll smoothly and kinda made a binding situation thus I lost control and down to mother earth. And lastly the only other cause I have seen is a stock Eflite servo either going bad and failing or simply the gears just stripping out. YES thats right STRIP out just hovering, that has happened a jillion time to us fliers. I had that happen to me before I installed Hitec metal gear servos in both of my 400's.

Hope that helps and if not, then it is a place to start.

Good Luck John

PS: check your TX batteries, remember 4.8 volt is when they fail. AND.......try runining up the some RPMS on the ground then shut her down and se how the blades spin free front and back and LISTEN too.

Binding is a big thing. Check the motor, ESC and battery after about a 2 minute hover, they should be warm to the touch, not hot. If you can't keep your hand on them more then 5 seconds, it is too hot. Fold a piece of paper and put it through the main gear and motor gear, it should crinkle the paper but not rip it. Adjust the mesh until the paper goes through. Check your belt, make sure you can push it to the other side in the hole on the tail. A tight tail belt will cause problems. Get some "Tri Flow" spray found at bike and lock smith stores, spray it into the tail boom and spin the rotors a few times. It is a dry lube and helps a great deal with reducing resistance.
What you are describing is the voltage dropping and the ESC cutting the power to save your battery. Something is causeing the battery to drain too fast. Either strain somewhere mentioned above, bad battery, or bad charger.

It has to be a binding thing as the battery is new and taking a good charge from two different chargers. How to measure that belt tension and adjusting it is what I need to know. I just put a piece of paper through both the motor to main gear and through the lower gear to smaller small gear a they just crinkle the paper. I put the paper in than reverse spun the blades and it came out nice and crinkled.
What do you mean push the belt to the other side through the hole in the tail? Where is the hole. Belt might be tight!
I loosened the belt screws and made it less tight. Maybe the boom bent slightly in the crash but really can't see a bend but the belt seemed a little tight. The dry lube is it like grafite? Will silicone spray work? Thanks Ron

I think, and I hate to say it and jinx it but the belt corrected the problem, I think, it did the job! No power drop out flew like before 6.5 minutes with its 2100 mah battery and I landed. It really felt good but I still have crashitis and a nervous wreck when flying. Well if its fixed that's great and I can continue to practice and get better. Don't think I'll be doing pirouettes for a while again. Thanks for all the help if not for nothing I learned a lot about adjusting the heli pitch, tracking. belt tension. I did notice that after 6.5 minutes the battery is warm the motor is warm but the top of the ESC is hot. This is probably normal. Ron
