Hi All,

I went to start my Raptor 30 the other day, and the fully-charged starter would not turn over the engine. The main shaft appeared to be totally locked, rotating in only one direction. A buddy advised that the clutch had probably gone bad, so I dropped the engine to inspect everything. The clutch was fine, so I re-assembled everything, and lo and behold, the main shaft would now rotate freely in both directions! Unfortunately, as soon as I applied the starter to the helicopter, the main shaft locked up again. I guess something is binding, but I'm not sure what?? This helicopter has never been crashed, so I'm sure that nothing is bent!

Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

Thanks,

John

Is it possible that you have connected your starter to your battery in reverse polarity?

Hi,

Can you rotate the shaft and turn the engine over by hand? Have you tried it with the glow plug removed?

Your motor is loading up with fuel, like gi8103 said, remove your glow plug, then turn the motor over with your starter to clean the fuel out (pull your fuel line off if you don't have a clip on the line to stop the fuel).

It's not your main shaft, it's your starter shaft.

The fan spun off the motor.

Take the clutch and fan off.

Clean all the threads.

Locktite the fan and install it with a crank lock (NOT PISTON LOCK!) tool, install the nut with locktite and let it sit over night. Then try starting it.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replies! I had a chance to look at my helicopter again last night, and found that fan assembly was indeed loose on the engine crankshaft! The fan was riding up and hitting the fan shroud causing everything
to lock up :-(! It's been a couple of years since I built this helicopter, so I forget how I tightened this assembly in the first place. Is a "crank lock" a common helicopter accessory? Is that somethink my LHS should have?

Thanks!

John
